Ertebolle, in Gen Z can’t work alongside people with different views because they ‘haven’t got the skills to disagree’ says British TV boss

When the "disagreement" is that your nosy Boomer Karen coworkers mis-gender you or disapprove of the way you live your life or think it's NBD that by the time you're their age we're going to be in the "find out" phase of the biggest disaster to hit Earth's biosphere in 65 million years, the problem isn't really with Gen Z.

TheRealKuni,

Considering everyone who saw the headline and didn’t read the article jumped into the comments talking about Boomers being transphobic, racist, or science deniers, I actually am not surprised at all by the article (which is, of course, generalizing an entire generation and therefore erroneous, but not entirely without merit).

It’s not about the topics they’re disagreeing on, it’s about the ability to disagree congenially and effectively, which is an extremely important skill in any workplace.

You aren’t going to change any minds by saying, “You’re wrong. I’m right. I’m done talking to you about this.” You also aren’t going to have your mind changed if you’re wrong, as is very common in a workplace. My solution to a problem isn’t always the right one. Other times it is. I need to know how to disagree and have constructive discussions about topics I disagree with others on to reach the best solutions.

This is one of the reasons diversity is important to businesses. Diversity of thought and constructive disagreement leads to improvement. But if we outright reject those who do not think like we do we all stagnate in our respective bubbles.

Sure this can be applied to good faith dialogue on larger, more important topics as many here seem to be assuming, but it is essential on day-to-day smaller issues that people face in the workplace.

We know those are the disagreements because we know boomers. “Don’t get mad at Nazi boomers. It’ll impact your productivity.”

Fuck off

DontMakeMoreBabies,

Feels like this is a prime example of what OP was writing about.

You disagree with what you believe the other person is saying and your go to is "fuck off"?

Super useful.

drewdarko,

We will never know what OP was talking about because the article intentionally left out examples..

What are some current topics that are not up for debate? I’ll list some:

-The right claims climate change isn’t real despite evidence and block efforts to prevent the extinction of our species.

-The right wants the history of black people to be removed from our schools and to ignore the systemic racism that exists to this day.

-The right wanted us to ignore epidemiologist and go about our lives as if there wasn’t a pandemic.

-The right wants us to ignore income inequality so they can pass more tax cuts for the rich and leave us without the basic resources we need to survive.

-The right wants to push lies about election fraud and take our democracy from us while suppressing voter rights.

These are just a few topics off the top of my head. There are many more. All of which are hot button issues between the right and left.

The article intentionally leaves out which topics are not up for debate so they can frame it as if the next generation isn’t willing to debate about work related topics. Which doesn’t make any sense if they have nothing to do with politics.

The election of Donald Trump to the presidency was a triumph that offered the best chance to reverse the left’s incessant march of progress for its own sake. Has anyone done so yet or are we peons pretty much on our own as usual?

And I would probably want to harm myself dealing with politicians who don’t prioritize solving problems over money, power, and other useless bullshit.

But I see an awful lot of selling out to corporate interests and not much of a call to fight against rising fascism … except as a tool in spam emails and texts to get more donations. I volunteer where I can because I genuinely give a shit. And then I get bombarded with two dozen spam bullshit fundraiser emails a day from this, that, or the other democratic PAC. Certainly doesn’t give me much hope that there’s any authenticity behind any of it.

    captainlezbian,

That’s what they’re trying now. Ohio is a major state, with multiple major cities, and a long history as a swing state due to being roughly even rural/urban. Like Columbus is really queer, Cleveland is just as Great Lakes as Toronto, Detroit, and Chicago, and we’ve also got Appalachia and a lot of what you probably can’t tell isn’t rural Indiana. Add in that Columbus is a major hub for business and it’s very valuable and perceived as takable.

Man looking at some of these with the years next to them and Ohio used to be kinda based

And yeah there are other things that may desperately need to be changed about our constitution that wouldn’t clear the 60% mark even beyond abortion. Namely our constitution currently prohibits recognition of gay marriage, which while no longer an issue in the Obergefell era, may become relevant again depending on who bribes the Supreme Court.

    thepixelfox,
    thepixelfox avatar

No, I think things like this that can cause a potential dangerous situation shouldn't be told. Coming out about anything, sexually, gender identity etc is a personal choice. Taking that from someone is a form of control.

If a teacher tries any of this shit when my kiddo is in school, I'm gonna lose it with them. It's up to my child if and when they feel comfortable telling me those things, if they ever realise they aren't straight or aren't the gender they were born as. It's their right to choose to tell me this. Not someone else. Just because they're children, doesn't mean we have rights to know everything. Their privacy is important too. Children are people, not possessions. They deserve respect. We don't demand someone's boss tells their family if they find out this stuff. We don't demand higher education teachers of over 18s to do this either. Just because their minors does not mean were entitled to know their private thoughts and feelings. Unless a child has admitted to thoughts of suicide/ harming themselves or others, I don't believe we should be told.

If they think a child has behavioural issues that need looking into, fine. That's good information. But outing someone, no matter their age is wrong and potentially dangerous. Luckily there's parents out there who will be accepting if they get information like this. But unfortunately there's parents who won't be, and depending on what those parents are like, it could result in some seriously bad situations arising.

I know my own parent was less then impressed when she found out Im pansexual. And they tried the whole 'but kids' and 'its just a phase thing.' which isn't as bad as some people/ children would get. But being invalidated doesn't feel good, especially on something that isn't an opinion, but a fact. Being told you're wrong for your sexuality or gender identity can do a lot of damage to people.

This is stupid. It shouldn't be a thing. I'm sick of the 'but the children' bullshit the government keep pushing as a cover for wanting more control. No end to end encryption, because we want to protect the children. Our children, because we want to protect the children. Access to your private messages, the children.
It's all bullshit they use to get people on board because children are an easy pawn to use. The government's of the world need to stop using children in pawns of their stupid games and just be honest. But how likely are people to listen if they say 'we want more control' over 'we are trying to protect the children!'

I'll say it again. Fuck the government.

    MasterObee,

If a teacher tries any of this shit when my kiddo is in school, I’m gonna lose it with them. It’s up to my child if and when they feel comfortable telling me those things, if they ever realise they aren’t straight or aren’t the gender they were born as. It’s their right to choose to tell me this. Not someone else. Just because they’re children, doesn’t mean we have rights to know everything

If the kid is socially transitioning at school, I think that falls under behavior parents should know. Same if the kids are being shitheads in class or getting beat up at recess.

    Ezra09,

There’s a gap between questioning and transitioning. Kids need people they feel safe talking to. Kids need to be able to ask questions about the world without feeling like they’ll be punished. You mentioned in other comments about programs to reduce abuse, but what about something as simple as:

Mr Teacher, I have questions about what it means to be a boy or girl. I don’t want to ask my parents because they get mad when the topic comes up on the news.

Well, little Timmy, you shouldn’t have told me that because I now need to legally tell your parents. Hope you’re ready to feel unloved just for asking a question, nerd.

    MasterObee,

There’s a gap between questioning and transitioning

If Jimmy is now going by Cindy, that’s a social cue of transitioning.

I agree they need people they feel safe talking to. Schools have counselors.

It shouldn’t be up to teachers to determine the morality of what the kids saying and whether they should share it with the parents or not.

Well, little Timmy, you shouldn’t have told me that because I now need to legally tell your parents. Hope you’re ready to feel unloved just for asking a question, nerd.

See? You have to be incredibly hyperbolic to even create a situation where it’d be bad for parents to discuss with parents about the children’s behavior.

If instead of a teacher, your kid starts going to church and has these secret meetings with pastors and priests, are you comfortable with that?

You say I’m using hyperbole in the same comment as this. You do know it’s possible to question gender without changing your name, right?

I did use hyperbole to make my point, but only in how bluntly it would be said. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say there are shitty, but not abusive enough to lose their kids, parents out there, and I do think there are kids out there who would rather ask questions of other adults in their lives. I am making this argument about the edge cases, because I think the argument “this will only fuck over a small percentage of people” is a shit take. So is “teachers are government employees who should act as interchangable robots that kids can’t trust or confide in.”

    MasterObee,

You do know it’s possible to question gender without changing your name, right?

Yes, which is why I think it’s weird that you try to draw this line that encourages teachers to hide that from parents.

. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say there are shitty, but not abusive enough to lose their kids, parents out there,

And you think government employees should determine that simply because of their intuition? The movement from objectivity to subjectivity at the whim of the government is tragic.

I do think there are kids out there who would rather ask questions of other adults in their lives.

    Therapists. Religious leaders. Aunts. Uncles.

Why does it have to be the teachers? The education system is a failure - our spending on schools tops the world. Literally 30% more per full time student than our peer countries. Our test scores are constantly at the bottom of those countries.

Then we’re being told that our schools are shitty because they’re underfunded. Then they tell us the students will do better if the teachers can teach them about gender and sexual ideologies at young ages, and have private conversations with the teachers.

Nah, dog. If our schools showed that they could teach our children math, english and science with the vast sums of money we keep throwing at them, maybe I’d buy it. But not with how shitty they’ve shown the education system is.

AlteredStateBlob, in US Supreme Court blocks student loan forgiveness plan
    AlteredStateBlob avatar

Student debt cannot be simply expunged through bankruptcy, it requires extra steps.

After the 2008 sub-prime mortage crisis, Hedgefunds and Banks didn't stop with their predatory behaviour, they simply shifted it around. Student loans were a prime target for that. As well as commercial mortage backed securities (CMBS) rather than the mortage backed securities (MBS) from that bubble popping in 2008.

With COVID making work from home inevitable and CMBS becoming a huge risk factor as well as student loans possibly being forgiven, the financial elites have been rotating to survive another day until they can resume squeezing your pennies out of you again so they don't have to go under.

Just a piece of the shit pie that the US financial markets are. It's just a huge rackateering ring. I'd be immensely surprised if student loans were ever forgiven or university costs socialized again in the future. It's just too lucrative to fuck young people.

    GataZapata,

The prohibitive cost of higher education and the factual uselessness of high school diploma keep young warm bodies going into the military. This is important for the nation that spends the most on its military, globally, and secures its global hegemony in large part through said military (but also of course cultural 'coca-colonialism')

Capitalism has robbed us of more than we could ever even imagine. To the point where most people don't even realize they've been robbed. It's tragic.

We live in a society where amoral, faceless corporations are more valued than actual human life. And those corporations have so much power over people, and their cognition, that the majority have been tricked into consenting to this perverted system against all of their interests. And I would love for someone to explain to me why there should ever be a distinction between the people producing something, and the people/corporations that own the means of that production. Why should these be two different groups, and why in the FUCK would the class that doesn't do any actual goddamn work, make 300x more money? It's fucking disgusting.

But on the other hand, they said they were going to lower taxes. And also, trans people exist, so........

    JasSmith,

Capitalism has robbed us of more than we could ever even imagine. To the point where most people don't even realize they've been robbed. It's tragic.

Capitalism isn’t perfect, but it’s the reason our standard of living is higher than ever. Every time we try anything else, millions of people die. I’m not sure how many more people need to die for people like you to accept reality. We need to improve capitalism, not turn to authoritarianism.

    HelixDab,

Here's a pro-tip for you: the opposite of capitalism isn't authoritarianism. That's where we already are.

The opposite of capitalism is socialism. Socialism is not an inherently authoritarian economic system.

And, food for thought: how many people in 3rd world countries have been killed by capitalism, hmmm?

    GataZapata,

Millions people starve under capitalism every year in a completely preventable fashion. Yes, other systems have been broken, but that doesn't mean capitalism is not

    Crimfresh,

No, that argument is a complete lie. Technology is why we have a higher standard of living. Technological advancements have taken place in communist countries. They experience the same increases of quality of living as capitalist countries. This proves that argument false. Capitalism isn't responsible for technology. That's just wealthy people pushing a narrative to protect the system that consolidates wealth in their hands. Consolidated wealth at the top of the economic ladder is a well known and documented side effect of capitalism. That's why capitalism requires strong regulations, not free market dogma.

    Aesthesiaphilia,

Technological advancements have taken place in communist countries.

    1. rofl

    2. regulated capitalism is very different than communism

    Crimfresh,

Formulate a response of substance or fuck off. You absolutely didn't disprove a single thing I said. Capitalism didn't raise the quality of living, technology did that. Capitalists steal everything thing they can, including credit for technological advances. They've been taking credit for work done by talented engineers and scientists for many generations.

    Aesthesiaphilia,

They've been taking credit for work done by talented engineers and scientists for many generations.

Those engineers and scientists were also capitalists rofl. Pfizer? Capitalist. Apple? Capitalist. Ford? Capitalist. Hell the only non capitalist quality of life enhancements we've had come from our military.

    Crimfresh,

To pretend that only capitalists have invented and improved technology is an exercise in ignorance.

    Aesthesiaphilia,

Sure, there have been advancements under communism. But the vast majority? Capitalism. Turns out greed is a powerful motivator.

    Crimfresh,

I'll bet a million dollars your comment is based on a dogmatic belief in capitalism and has absolutely no evidence whatsoever backing it up. You're basically just making shit up as you go without looking at any data at all. With a rose tinted lense towards capitalism because that's what you were taught to never question.

    Aesthesiaphilia,

I'm not gonna fall for the old sealioning "find me evidence to prove something obvious" ploy. If you ever want to educate yourself, please just google a list of inventions of the past few centuries. And then send me a million dollars.

    Crimfresh,

Thanks for proving I was right. You don't have shit to back up your bullshit. Capitalism didn't invent anything, science did that. But you don't give a shit about being correct, you have capitalist dogma to spread, regardless of facts.

    Kbin_space_program,

Fun fact, one of the major reasons the elite of the 13 colonies wanted to separate from the British Empire is that a lot of them would get huge loans from banks in London under the name of a fictitious company in a given colony, close up shop, move to a different colony and repeat.

It's why the original astroturfed riots were organized in Boston and well as why the Sons of Liberty were created. Because among other things, the Stamp act would have prevented the main method they used to execute the fraud.

See the book: Crucible of War by Fred Anderson. It starts dry but is absolutely worth it.

sota2077, in Florida woman who shot Black neighbor through door won't face murder charge
    @sota2077@lemmy.world avatar

Susan Lorincz has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm and assault in the June 2 shooting death of Ajike Owens.

So she was charged. Just not with murder. Which still sucks, but it is much better to go to court and find her guilty of manslaughter with a firearm and assault than it is to charge her with murder and have her be acquitted due to lack of evidence.

    bing_crosby,

Yeah this one hell of a clickbaity title.
