Speaking of Minis, I saw this one listed on eBay and am dying to know how it gets this way. Thrown out of a car? Used as a scratching toy for a tiger? Did a dremel get possessed by an evil spirit and decided to attack?
@paul I would guess this was someone's travel companion
I once bought a Samsung laptop and took it with me to London - was in my backpack the whole time. Took it out it looked like someone had thrown it off a roof
@paul I wonder if people still mount Mac minis in their cars? That used to be a thing for a while. If it was in an open spot, I could imagine gravel or so doing that to a case.
@paul Intel Mac minis are (still) often used in the events and AV industry, often as small Windows boxes, because they are tough and because they integrate the power supply.
@paul back when going into offices were the norm I used to work with a bloke who would bring a Mac mini into the office every day instead of a laptop… interesting choice but it worked for him seemingly haha
@paul I find this happens quite often if the Mac was sold to a recycling center by a business or institution. Basically they are tossed into bins with other Macs and get quite trashed.
@paul Definitely been on the road and mounted/unmounted from some kind of bracket many, many times. Maybe as part of an Audio system for concerts or events and the like.
@paul one time i dropped my steel water bottle on a mac mini and dented it pretty badly. it immediately shut down, but booted fine and continued working after that 🤷🏻♀️
@paul what are your plans for it? I used an old mini as a home server for a while but replaced it with a proper NAS and now I don't know what to do with it.
The m2 mini is almost exactly 2x as fast as the i5 2018. But its > 2x as expensive. I don't have a point really, just funny how close to twice as fast it is.
@paul I just bought an M2 mini to replace a 2020 i5, my goodness it’s a lot better. But I’m seeing the i5 a lot more expensive on other sites (Amazon) so ports maybe?
@paul at today’s prices, but the 2018 i5 base configuration with 256 SSD and 8GB RAM was $1,100 when new. The base configuration 2023 M2 (with the same storage and RAM) is $600.
Almost half the price for twice the performance seems like a much better deal today than the i5 mini was in 2018.
I traded in my 2018 mini for the M1 when they first launched. The trade-in allowance then was sufficient that I didn’t have to add much at all for the M1 at the time.
@paul was between an M2 and M2 Pro when considering this exact upgrade and opted for the M2. figured “double the performance” was more than enough for a basic user like myself lol
@paul After Apple made the BS change with cloud providers mounting points, cloud storage has become virtually meaningless on Macs with smaller internal drives - and the small drives plus external drives with cloud storage were their saving grace. I don't know what I'll do next, but what I won't be doing is paying Apple's extortionate storage taxes to get a reasonable amount of internal storage :( My 256 gig was fine till they did that.
@paul But its buggy firmware update protocol causes it to load Galaxy Store apps that crash a relatively unknown south Pacific island nation's economy 5x before afternoon tea
@mattisenhower@orchardresales oh neat, I've been wanting a 2014 i7 16gb just to have one since it's a model I never bought. Will have to keep an eye to see if they ever get one in stock.
@paul I wanted to teach my kids how to run a business and keep themselves busy in the hot Summer. It's been a fun little project and Shopify has been awesome to learn.
@paul lol the Intel ones are so cheap now! it rules. I’m digging the i5 2018 model I picked up a month ago. Using it with an eGPU to edit on Final Cut and it's a solid solution for my needs.
