After a few false starts (oops, there were multiple more inspectors than I realized and they made me turn it back off for a bit) I finally got the permission to operate for my #solar install today! Of course for the first day I can operate it legally it would be cloudy and overcast, but it's also cool(ish) so my power requirements should remain low!
Smelting #Steel Without Fossil Fuels: #Solar Power Shatters the 1,000°C Barrier for Industrial Heating
"Swiss researchers have developed a solar energy method using synthetic quartz to achieve temperatures above 1,000°C for industrial processes, potentially replacing fossil fuels in the production of materials like steel and cement."
Maybe it's an efficiency thing.
Maybe it's just a cool new tech. After all, when DVDs were invented we didn't really need them, either, as we already had ways to play recorded music.
Like I said, this is still in the lab, it remains to be seen if it can be scaled up, and cheaply enough, to compete.
@pee yes I use the announcements for the geyser, so that if I know power is going off in 30 mins time, I turn the geyser on (but our geyser stays off until we want to heat it up - it is only 100L).
@pee not sure if my code at https://github.com/Danie10/gadgeteerza-homeassistant will help give any pointers. Big thing is to test it in parts, first the trigger works, then a notification. Also need to be sure the notification devices are actually logged in and connected - can see that in HA's Developer Tools and STATES.
@BlumeEvolution

Without celebrating the climate progress that we've made we send a signal to young people that we've not been trying to address the problem and that's a problem.
Already, the rollout of clean generation, led by solar and wind, has helped to slow the growth in fossil fuels by almost two-thirds in the last 10 years. As a result, half the world’s economies are already at least five years past a peak in electricity generation from fossil fuels.
As I suspected, the flare came from AR3664, which has nearly rotated out of view of Earth. Probably aren't going to see any aurora from this flare. X8.8 is still impressive though. I wish the sun had been clear for me to see it (and take pics of it).
Stating what should be obvious, but is too often ignored in calls for solar farms - we have plenty of existing infrastructure on which to be installing solar.
We don't need to centralize nor overrun more habitat.
Less than a year ago, in August 2023, we installed a 4.8kWh Solar Battery at a cost of £2,900. Whenever I talk about the upfront capital costs of solar power, people rightly want to know what the payback period is. Well, after less than 10 months, the battery has given us 1MWh. To put that […]
