May 3rd- Happy International SUN Day!

The idea behind this day was to “draw attention to sustainable energy sources and their use for the solutions of ecological problems”.

Storing energy with is about to have its moment of truth
Toronto-based Inc. is one of the businesses developing long-duration energy storage that has moved beyond lab scale and is now focusing on building big things. The company makes systems that store energy in the form of compressed air, which can be released to produce electricity for eight hours or longer.
Technology will be used to store wind and energy for use later.

holgerschurig,

@chiefbongo @techducks IKEA Zigbee Steckdosen kriegen immer Mal wieder Software-Updates.

Had our first full month of export. The electricity bill could be negative. Most of the import is charging the car on cheap rate.

bazcurtis,

@steevc Agreed. I top up my battery each night via Agile and start exporting almost straight away.

Latest follow-up podcast is out! YouTube: https://youtu.be/m0GfWX5sT4o Audio version: https://share.transistor.fm/s/ce9cce2d Sean and I talk about whether or not the distrust in sustainable tech, like home solar panels, is based on fact or fiction.

simplenomad,
@simplenomad@rigor-mortis.nmrc.org avatar

@mattferrell Let Sean know since he referenced a human ear growing on a rat I was 1) immediately reminded of a character Ear Man from the David Cronenberg film “Crimes of the Future” (I did not see it, just saw stills from the movie), and 2) also immediately kept mentally seeing Sean as Ear Man trying to do the podcast. Very distracting, I kept giggling like an 11 year old. Otherwise, great podcast.

@simplenomad ha! I’m definitely sharing that with him.

Hey, , I’d like to get some solar panels installed on my roof, and I’m intimidated because I know there’s a lot of scammy companies out there. Anyone have any advice, on installers or literally anything else ?

@Jonricha

I think @jcrabapple recently got solar installed. He isn’t in Indiana, but might still have some advice.

Gonna try to do some inside today while I work.

One of the perks of a) working from home, and b) having a large south-facing window.

Not really ideal optically, but the only alternative is leaving my scope outside mostly unattended.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Okay, nevermind, the image quality through the window is horrible lol

I don't remember it being this bad the last time I tried, but I'm also not surprised.

@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Grabbed one of the raw images to get a better look at it. Quick and dirty edit, but you might actually be able to see what I'm talking about.

@ai6yr In Idaho our regressive legislature lets the state’s largest electric utility write the rules. Personal solar holds very little financial incentive anymore. There are still large installations going up and maybe that’s a bigger win on balance.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@petep44 Yes, the retrogressive legislatures are a big problem. I am disappointed that places like Arizona and Hawaii have such poor adoption, when they could make a substantial transition with just non-protective solar power acceptance.

Solar energy is now being installed faster than any other energy technology in history! 🎉

By 2031, solar is projected to surpass ALL COMBINED forms of energy technology, which is actually amazing, even as a proponent of renewables.

Solar installation is 10-fold higher than 10 years ago and is doubling every 3 years.

Truly wonderful news! Some nice charts below to show the growth and comparative build out too.

“At current growth rates (20% per annum), solar will pass fossil gas in 2024 and coal in 2025. Current growth rates also suggest that solar will approach 9 TW in 2031, when there will be more solar generation capacity than everything else combined.

Global nuclear capacity and annual nuclear generation have been static for the past dozen years. Nuclear failed in the global energy marketplace.”

@auscandoc@med-mastodon.com avatar

@thepoliticalcat I’ve noticed this, maybe you have also? The “nuclear will save us” proponents go silent when followed with “Ok in your backyard then?”

Now that the longer days are here, solar production at the house has gone up a lot, compared to winter, even with one panel down, due to a broken microinverter. I’m glad Enphase and our local solar installer are providing good service and warranty repair. Thanks, Highpoint Solar.
