IBM says it has "zero tolerance for hate speech and discrimination" and has "immediately suspended" all advertising on #X following a report that the platform ran IBM ads alongside pro-Nazi material. #Twitter
@GottaLaff That's fabulous! Every time a large company does something like this, it means someone who works for them has been advocating for the decision for a long time, and they finally got through.
Well that’s certainly a welcome 180 from IBM’s previous business of providing computer type punch cards to the Nazis of Jewish citizens during World War II.
@GottaLaff I kinda miss the days of signing on to social media and getting absolutely unhinged ads for mobile games and ads asking me if I'd like to be able to spin up nine million Linux containers in a few seconds. 😞
IBM had that awful past, but now are leaving because of the Nazi issue struck me as a good thing, a 180, at least in this regard. That was my reference.
@GottaLaff Sorry, I thought that was on the Santos thread. Never mind. Mastodon doesn't do a good job of presenting context when serving up a notification, just another thing I have to work around.
While I have your attention, can I just thank you for your brilliant, informative toot threads and commentary.
I look forward to seeing them in my timeline 😊
2/ I totally get the reactions I'm getting... but as I keep saying, let's try to be happy about good news for a couple of minutes before jumping on it?
I'm happy they did this. Yes, it should have been forever earlier. But I'm taking time to notice that someone did something right. Better late than never.
@GottaLaff Completely agree. It's too bad it took IBM this long to care, and that it took their brand being directly associated with Nazis, but still good to see the finally did the right thing.
I'm afraid I've had to institute an aggressive muting strategy. No shade on you, Laffy - I know you work hard to keep your mentions as open as possible, and I respect the extra effort you make to do so. But I just can't with all the negativity.
Oh, I've seen some people who just needed to vent get replies from other people, saying that they use different standards when social media-ing, and it can come across as "you're doing it wrong, you should do like I do". I just wanted to make sure that me describing what I do isn't intended as critiquing what you do. (Phew. What a long explanation!)
Anyways, I've seen two other people I follow here say "Enough with Twitter" today, so I'm celebrating! 🎉
@GottaLaff I think some of the cynicism stems from the fact that IBM has a history of actively courting Nazis, even in defiance of their own government; and so them saying "ooh, that's so bad! We would NEVER!" rings a bit hollow.
Also, big companies never do the right thing, only ever the profitable thing. If that's aligned with good, then they'll make hay from it; but their decisions are motivated solely by money.
But I'm always happy to see more gas on the Musk/Twitter dumpster fire.
@GottaLaff Always! Take the good news as it comes and be glad of every little victory. There’s plenty of gloom to go around and most of us are well aware of it.
@GottaLaff Let's see how long that lasts. I predict: one news cycle. They'll milk it for good will then quietly begin advertising on Twitter again when public outcry declines.
@ParanoidFactoid You didn't You were one of a few. It's getting to the point where I no longer want to share good news because I get back nothing but negative replies.
So why bother?
But thank you for your kindness and being so sweet about it.
