Bonjour les Mastonautes. Couché un peu tard car nous avons regardé la fin de la Saison 4 de For All Mankind sur Apple TV+. Après un passage à vide, particulièrement sensible suite à une Saison 3 un peu longuette, il se passe enfin quelque chose et la série se termine sur un joli n’importe quoi tellement humain. It’s so difficult (and expensive) to run a #Matrix#Synapse server for my own domain. Is it worth it?
I started out wanting to support Matrix, and I've set up a number of channels for my community on Matrix, but everything happens on Discord and IRC right now, and we have a bridge between Discord and IRC, but we can't bridge to Matrix at the moment, so is it even worth it to keep maintaining a separate Matrix presence?
If not, I’m just gonna shut it down. I don’t want to spend the money.
@ramsey I set up synapse many years ago and it was a nightmare. And a resource hog. Guess it hasn't improved. Wrote a few bots. Tried also to write a custom proxy and the proxying protocol was so weird. Hell the whole protocol was weird: maccaroons wtf? My understanding is that the server doesn't follow the spec anyway.
I don't consider Matrix a serious project or protocol anymore. If I had to build anything that had to work reliably I'd use either IRC or XMPP.
They used to teach first aiders to leave a crush injury because removing a crushing force could release trapped body chemistry problems to flow around the body. Now they recommend get the piano off the dude, which always sort of made more sense to me. Continuing to be crushed is worse than any problems stopping it causes.

The problem with “the existence of high specs means higher spec requirements” is that not only is it a fallacy, it discourages many people from getting into PC gaming.
I know this because many, many people believe that you can’t game on a PC unless you get the highest specs available.
And why are they convinced of this? Because they have this conversation at their local Best Buy:
CUSTOMER: I want to buy this $500 laptop.
BEST BUY REP: What are you going to do with it?
CUSTOMER: Play games.
BEST BUY REP: You can’t game on that laptop. You need a dedicated $2,000 gaming PC to do any gaming. Perhaps you want a Nintendo Switch instead?
That conversation seems ridiculous. And yet, I’ve actually heard real Best Buy reps say this to me – even though all I wanted at the time was a cheap laptop to play Half-Life and a bunch of indie games.
Now I know that Best Buy reps are not necessarily the most knowledgeable about computers, but if they’re saying such claptrap, how many people out there actually believe the same thing?
Just because an RTX 4090 costs $2,000 doesn’t mean that a $500 laptop cannot play games.
And how do I know this? Because a Steam Deck costs $500 and it can even play AAA games! This isn’t just “in theory” – I’ve actually done it!
We need to put this fallacy of “higher specs mean higher spec requirements” to rest.

I dug out a pair of old wellies that are infrequently used but stored in an open cover next to the house. I emptied the debris out, and with it came this wasps nest - abandoned at the end of last summer I suspect.
They really are lovely delicate constructions of paper.
@ak That is why I always shake the boots 🤣 They are very old - belonged to my father who died 7 years ago and don’t really fit me but do one of our sons who can occasionally be persuaded to help in the garden.
