#nobridge I am enough of an antique to remember when the internet used to be a refuge from the rat race. But ever since social media it has become the center of the rat race, right in the mainstream of it. Dunno if Mastodon etc will help that; hopefully it will.

@_L1vY_ You're not the only one.

The CIA or FBI recently issued a warning exactly to that effect. There must be a lot of activity brewing in nazi-land for them to do such a thing.

I learned something new about DMV law. If you buy a car, and don't register it, all your parking tickets go to the previous owner! And there is no way anyone can change that! The previous owner has to pay your parking tickets forever.

You can request a document from the DMV that shows you're not the legal owner anymore, it costs $4, and they never send it to you. You can request it again and pay another $4!

Maybe I'll just report the car stolen, since DMV still shows me as the owner.

For those wanting to switch to , here is the strategy I advise, based on 25 years experience:

  1. Search what others with a similar background to you and similar hardware to you have got good results from.
  2. Get some USB keys
  3. Download the live versions of a couple distros that you think you might like or that others seem to like
  4. Try them all!
  5. Don't waste your time if they don't work or you don't vibe with them.
  6. Install one you like.
  7. Repeat if install fails.
ramsey, to Matrix
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

It’s so difficult (and expensive) to run a #Matrix #Synapse server for my own domain. Is it worth it?

I started out wanting to support Matrix, and I've set up a number of channels for my community on Matrix, but everything happens on Discord and IRC right now, and we have a bridge between Discord and IRC, but we can't bridge to Matrix at the moment, so is it even worth it to keep maintaining a separate Matrix presence?

If not, I’m just gonna shut it down. I don’t want to spend the money.

bamfic,
@bamfic@autonomous.zone avatar

@ramsey I set up synapse many years ago and it was a nightmare. And a resource hog. Guess it hasn't improved. Wrote a few bots. Tried also to write a custom proxy and the proxying protocol was so weird. Hell the whole protocol was weird: maccaroons wtf? My understanding is that the server doesn't follow the spec anyway.

I don't consider Matrix a serious project or protocol anymore. If I had to build anything that had to work reliably I'd use either IRC or XMPP.

some terms seem to be spreading from the crypto sphere into more general conversation and one of them is the suffix -pilled. I have been hearing it around enough I keep almost using it by mistake. Is there a better term (slang preferred) to refer to someone who has entirely bought into the propaganda of a thing?

bamfic,
@bamfic@autonomous.zone avatar

@liaizon Originally from the Matrix movie, adopted and corrupted by creepy dudebro pick up artist sleazeballs, then by MAGA alt right types, incels, 4channers.

It was a useful term in 1999. Not anymore AFAICT.

Truly amazing record run of renewable energy carrying 100% of California’s grid for portions of the day:

43 straight days — and 67 out of 73 days — where clean energy exceeded 100% of demand.

5th largest economy on the world, 39 million people and over a million EVs on the road here.

Right now renewables are producing 103% of demand and it’s 3:30pm here. It’s just amazing and should bring immense hope around the world!

Not trying to call out anyone in particular, I see a lot of people doing this, but I'm really curious and would like to understand this better.

Folks who use vague alt text with your images ("a funny book cover", "photo of me outside"), what is your thought process? Is the image description intended for sighted people? Or maybe your admin made alt text mandatory? Or maybe that really does seem sufficient.

@RickiTarr Many decades ago, I was once a product manager. I could not get engineers to write documentation. They hated it. They just wouldn't do it. So I just wrote it myself, wrong, just made shit up and guessed the best I could, and sent it to them for review. And instantly got back copious notes, corrections, explanations, and, well, documentation, which is what I wanted in the first place. It was easy.

Wanna know how you get a doom loop? Let cities like Grants Pass make it illegal to be homeless, so the affected people go to a city like Portland, which is probably not going to pass such a law (yet), causing the pressure there to increase, making everybody angry and miserable until Portland passes the law, and then ...

Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson is saying "look how much worse the libberul cities are now".

#GrantsPass #Homeless
#DoomLoop #RaceToTheBottom

bamfic,
@bamfic@autonomous.zone avatar

@joelvanderwerf Once you make everywhere illegal to be homeless, your prisons become your homeless shelters.

Significant profits will be made in building and staffing more of them, at the taxpayers expense, of course. Until, as housing prices increase and jobs get eliminated, they too lose their housing, and become homeless, and get sent to prison as well.

When that gets too expensive, I'm sure the remaining billionaires will devise a Final Solution to the problem.

Can someone please explain why, on a planet with 5 billion too many people and , declining birthrates are a problem?

I'm at a loss.

bamfic,
@bamfic@autonomous.zone avatar

@LeftistLawyer The Bigger Sucker problem, which every Ponzi scheme has, including modern debt-based fiat money systems and capitalism, require a constant influx of new rubes to keep the game going. If that stops, then whole scam collapses.

You create money out of thin air. People have to pay, say, 5% more back, compounded over time, in order for you to agree to give it to them.

Where they gonna get that from? They need people to fleece, environments to defile, commons to plunder and monetize.

    The authors are political science professors at Stony Brook.

    Their point: The biggest divide isn’t by party.

    The biggest divided is by involvement in politics.

    The most vocal voices from social media, who are amplified by the mainstream media, come from a relatively small group.

    Echoing what Dannagal Young had to say in “Wrong: How Media, Politics, and Identity Drive our Appetite for Misinformation," the authors talk about 2 sets of relatively small groups of hyper-engaged partisans.
