Okay, I just couldn’t let this rest in my head. I've done a few simple simulations, comparing:

  • relative change in net revenue (what you keep after fees)
  • for developers staying INSIDE the App Store
  • using Apple's In-App Purchases

under the new EU rule compared to the old App Store model.

🇬🇧 Well, and they figured out how to get around the regulations... Although I think the European Union will not leave it at that.

Another thing of interest in the Apple announcement is the ability to use our own browser core. We need to understand all the details there and clearly there is a concern that we would have to have two binaries, one for the EU and one for the rest of the world, but at least EU users will get a better browser! I hope the rest of the world will too!

It's clear doesn't want openness, alternatives and choice for their customers.

Even developers of free apps have to pay 50ct per installation per year if they reach more than 1 million installs and are distributed via an alternative app store. This is just insane 🤯

I dare say that there is no reason to market an item when demand outstrips supply.

Apple has announced some SWEEPING changes coming to the App Store in the EU with iOS 17.4:

  • Alternative app marketplaces
  • 0% commission for apps sold outside the App Store, with 0% commission on alternative payment methods (!)
  • Third-party browser engines now allowed (!!)
  • Game streaming now allowed on the App Store

We have an extensive summary of all the changes on MacStories, with more to come shortly: https://www.macstories.net/news/apple-details-how-it-plans-to-comply-with-the-eus-digital-markets-act/

@viticci Yes and no. I read in another article that requires a $1,000,000 letter of credit for any individual or organization who wants to run a 3rd party . This most likely means that only large corporations will be able to add alternative AppStores, but open source indie devs and apps, like those present on probably won‘t.

For developers who still want to stay 100% on App Store using Apple’s payment system, the new business terms for EU look like a gamble to me.

If you have a <1M annual install, you can earn more money.

But if your app goes viral, you can go bankrupt after paying the Core Technology Fee.

$500,000 - $50,707 * 12 = ($108,484)

Is Apple trying to learn from Unity?

If you want to be able to have your application downloaded through other means than the app store, you have to pay apple 50c pr install over 1 million yearly.

I would think this is in violation of the DMA, but kind of sounds like Apple does not care.

I bet you ANYthing Apple will begin rolling out different iOS versions for each country they must open their App Store up to AT DIFFERENT TIMES - ya' know, like AFTER the new features are available in the US.

And I don't blame them. Why waste time working that hard when the in those countries no longer generate development revenue for ?

Lots of talk today about new EU regulations, and they're largely great. But I have questions.

So, third party browser engines are a thing now. So what happens now?

Is Chrome in the EU going to be Chromium, and still WebKit everywhere else? Or will they all just keep riding WebKit until these App Store changes (inevitably) go global? If they have to maintain 2 apps, will the WebKit version begin to lag out of resource constraints (or plain old spite)?

First time I used Codes for promoting my App Wallflower 2 and I have to say it's a great tool. Wonder why I haven't seen this use by other indie devs?!

My app has a subscription for €49/year, but with the code RELEASEWEEK you can get the first 3 months for €10 during this release week.

This is different than Promo codes, way more flexible, you can make up to a million and it's on you how you distribute them. Super useful.

I just realized something slightly troublesome on the whole ecosystem which is relevant to but also family sharing in general.
First of all, everyone in your family can see all apps you have installed, this could probably be turned off if purchase sharing is disabled, still need to check.
Secondly and what’s worse, kids can install these apps from the family sharing setting without approval even if app purchase approval is required.
Waiting for my daughter to find this out and ask me what this tinder app is for 🤦‍♂️

I know I’m going to catch a lot of flack for this, but wouldn’t it be within a company’s rights to put out a SDK with a condition that they get a percentage of revenue generated by software created with it? And also within their rights to require that any software making calls to proprietary APIs on their operating system be compiled by that SDK?

There are tons of examples of this. Is the whole counter-argument that iOS is a monopoly?

mjgardner,
@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@kfury Yep, the #AppStore is a “#monopoly" on non-#Mac #Apple platforms, just like:

#EpicGames has products available for all of the above consoles, but they're butthurt because they want more profit margins than Apple's terms allow.
