Today we did a 20 mile ride out to a beach on Oslofjord.

I really need to stop and take more photos as it's hard to put into words how much more pleasant biking is in Norway than the US.

The bike infrastructure is better than Seattle but most importantly the car drivers are far more aware of bikes and I almost never feel like I'm in a dangerous situation. #BikeTooter #bikejoy #seattle #norway

Has anyone named the paradox where someone being considerate to a cyclist is actually dangerous because the 5 asshats behind them will try and rush through as soon as they're able, whatever the risks?

PipGowenlock,
@PipGowenlock@urbanists.social avatar

Not saying people should not be considerate, nor that I'm not grateful for their thought. Just that asshats gonna asshat, and by doing so they risk my life.

Lamppost EV chargers are the answer to how you charge your vehicle in cities.

This is possible because when energy intensive street lamps were replaced by LEDs, there’s excess power for charging EVs.

All cities should do this. ⚡️

@davidho Here's an enhancement: setting up bike corrals with ebike charging capabilities by streetlight poles.

In urban environments with multistory apartments, storing a bike above the ground floor is a challenge for many; a 50+ lb/23+ kg ebike even more of a challenge. Curbside storage and charging would enable cycling for many. And the total demand is much less than EV charging...

I'm calling this a preview but it's a pretty solid version of MEGAMAP 1.2, using the 1.1 rev 4 dataset, which is the latest.

Anybody wants to look at it, it's on my maps Github, click on PREVIEW MEGAMAP:

Just once it would be nice to be able to install a bike rack without having to hacksaw some strut or bolt or something, y'know?

Aw, nuts. Interview with a guy who built his own tiny home, but they didn't talk about this part: built a rack for his bike and made a bike trailer that matches his home which also has a hanging place.

Two more boxes of books donated to the library via bicycle. Must be 100 lbs in these two, decided against 3 boxes, which was a good choice.

Es waren viele unterschiedliche Personen und Räder auf dem leider recht unspektakulären Track. Das Gesamtbild wurde aber ganz klar hauptsächlich von trainierten Ambitionierten geprägt, zumindest auf dem 300 km Track :o)

After getting back into bicycling, suddenly realize HOW MUCH of towns here in Southern California are built around cars, and getting cars from place to place (and not so much people). You're so blind to those design choices when you're in a car!

I would like to share the track of my recent 4-days tour through Uppland, Sweden. I usually start planning a route with the app BRouter (Android) with the profile "trekking" for finding suitable routes. Next I check the chosen route and might manually improve it by using smaller "no-name" roads. Quite often I also check the pavement of the road by using Google Street View.

Thousand Oaks Acorn: Prizes, maps, workshops and training highlight Bicycle Month

"The Ventura County Transportation Commission and the nonprofit Bike Ventura County organization use prizes, maps and training to accomplish these goals.

The commission’s new guide, “Biking Ventura County: Routes & Tips for Beginners & Families,” makes it easy to find a place to ride. It highlights shared-use paths and separated bike lanes across the county and provides guidance on safety, e-bikes and tips for taking bicycles aboard public transit. "

ai6yr,

"A Brew Ride takes place on the second Sunday of each month from 1 to 4:30 p.m., starting at 490 N. Ventura Ave. This social ride celebrates Ventura’s award-winning breweries, but safety is paramount.

“There’s no excessive drinking and riding,” Abele said. “Riders enjoy tastings and . . . chat with local brewers.”

The casual ride starts after lunch, and participants will have just enough time for one drink at each of two brewery visits. “Remember, on the road, cyclists are vehicles subject to all traffic laws, including those against drunk driving,” Abele said. "

Okay so with no show stoppers appearing, I've dropped Greater Northshore BIke Map 1.2 - Late May 2024, which shows bike infrastructure and adds preferred non-infrastructure routes between the Seattle and the new Eastside 2 Line Bike Connector maps.

You can find it here:

https://github.com/solarbirdy/NorthshoreBikeMap

It covers Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Juanita, parts of north Redmond that the 2 Line leaves out, and a decent chunk of unincorporated NE King County.

Next up will be a revision of the MEGAMAP, a map that pastes together the Greater Northshore map and the two others into one big poster-sized beast.
