Biked a total of 7.5. miles this morning. Biked 4 miles to my uncles (I did get lost so it took longer than it should have), biked 1.5 miles to get food and then another 1.5 to get home. Overall, it was really fun.
"Electric vehicles as a whole displaced about 1.5m barrels of oil a day globally in 2022, according to Bloomberg. Two-thirds of that – almost 1m barrels a day – was just from electric bikes and mopeds, which are known as electric micromobility."
Electric bikes from Decathlon have been catching our eye for some time now. One key model - the R500e Longtail - needed a closer look. Now the review is done our tester would like to hang on to it, which is about as good an endorsement as they come: https://www.cyclingelectric.com/reviews/decathlon-r500e-cargo-bike-review
Body of research grows that indicates the e-bike is a silver bullet for the transport ecosystem in reducing traffic & helping people become more active. Of course, mobile people stay & shop on high streets too, so not bad for the economy either: https://www.cyclingelectric.com/news/study-e-bike-riders-drive-less-trips
Stream from @notjustbikes at the Fully Charged Show with some commentary about some of the risks of commerical electric cargo bikes on bicycle infrastructure.
Removing speed limiters, maxing out dimensions, and electric motorbikes pretending to be bicycles.
@quixoticgeek@ChrisMayLA6 🤷♂️ Seems 5here is conflicting data. I'd have to look into it further. Sometimes I've noticed that only the emissions during movement are included (per Km) and don't take into account that a ships engines are still running in port for example. So there they could hook up to dockside electric instead. I'll dig into it more later.
@TheShuck@ChrisMayLA6 the use of shore power when in port is required in many places. Most ports however, esp in the developed world, have emissions regulations, meaning they are burning the cleaner fuel then. Also they tend to be just running generators at that point. Most extremely large ship engines are direct drive. So they can't idle the engine in port.
I’m looking into electric bikes and would love some recommendations, specifically bikes that can handle the SF hills without too much trouble, but can carry a shopping bag too.
Ideally, not too much maintenance.
And maybe friendly, helpful people, possibly local? Though that might be too much to ask.
@Ingurido Start with your local bike shop. sometimes they have staff you can't stand, but most have good enough prices on quality bikes and stand behind what they sell. Support them first if possible.
@cyclingelectric My kids will never get that many bikes back in it. The front bike no problem, but if they want the middle bike the front bike needs to come out and won't get put back. Woe be to the person who wants the back bike. It also doesn't have space for a trailer, tandem or cargo bike. I have to give it a fail to be useful for the job.
