Got sucked into the great discussions at and didn’t live post as much as I had planned. Another fantastic event. If you see the is shortly and are in the Mountain View CA area a few of us may grab some lunch in person shortly. And one action item of many from the conference is a bunch of folks will be trying to hold some in person meetups (around the globe actually) including here in the Bay Area - looking forward to them.

is a wrap. It was chock full of fedi goodness. I expect to be still be talking about some of the content .6 FediForums from today.

Found my way into a great discussion on implementing the ability to create private groups, and it startled me how emphatically a few folks were puzzled why this would be desired. One person repeatedly characterized private groups as "hiding from the public square". It feels like issues of harassment (sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) are talked about with such urgency (at least in my circles?) - I can't be the only hearing that? The public sphere isn't safe for everyone.

was fantastic, but now I think I need to sleep for a few days at least. Definitely not used to so much social interaction 😅

My big takeaway from : we need private groups in addition to a public square. Wishing Mastodon had this already, but maybe someone can make it happen?

There's so much to cover at the that @hello (WeDistribute) was desperate enough to allow me to post in the live feed.

Come check it out!

In the today, we've been talking about how to monetize Fediverse content. I have talked about a rough outline for how to do it before -- setting up a private account, enabling out-of-band payment, and approving followers based on payment.

As a proof of concept, I've set up a premium account on my personal server. @evanplus is a subscription only private account (separate from my friends-and-family account) where I will post content I think is worth paying for.

i think the most annoying thing about this whole discourse is that people refuse to judge threads by the standard of any other fedi instance

like if a mastodon instance got set up and federated right now and it allowed the shit threads allowed it'd be widely defederated IMMEDIATELY

there are accounts literally CALLING FOR THE DEATHS OF QUEER PEOPLE on there right fucking now

the only reason people are even willing to give them a chance is because it's a big corpo, but that should only be reason to give them less of one lmao. especially considering meta's history in particular

don't let them lower the bar for moderation standards here

I did a speed demo of SoraSNS today at ✨🧑‍💻

This is the first related event I joined and I was surprised by the passion and energy of the people building a better, decentralized future together👏

It’s truly a wonderful event!

I got more hyped about the Fediverse!

Next year I’ll definitely join again and even attempt to run a session.

(Attaching the little summary deck I made 3 hours before the demo 😅

so attending today will try to live post a bit over the morning - if you happen to be in Mountain View and also attending I'm working from 1OZ coffee this morning and will grab lunch after the closing session

Lots of great demos at today. Particularly looking forward to Emissary by @benpate, which was described as an "RSS Server", but it seems to be a lot more than that. I like that it brings the indie web and ActivityPub together. https://github.com/EmissarySocial/emissary

One of the sessions yesterday at the focused on CSAM, quite a tough topic.

If you host your own instance, even if it's just YOU on that instance, you need to read this and consider taking action to protect yourself and your moderation team.

Kudos to @thisismissem and @iftas for exploring new ways to manage this without scarring moderators for life.

Hello Twters. So I've got a chest infection. I am beyond upset, I'm too busy to be sick at the moment! Finger's crossed it's a few days, not a few weeks... I've got a lot on, including a spa booked next week overnight with my daughter for her birthday. 😞

I was well enough to attend the yesterday though and it was a wealth of information and interesting people. Hoping to be able to dip in and out of it today, as I won't be able to stay for the whole thing

Happy Hump Day, all 😘

So, it seems that watching me type is incredibly boring. So, even though I could live-code a custom Fediverse app in the first 10-15 minutes of a session, it's probably better to just show it working.

It's only ~100 lines of JSON config, and less than than in HTML templates. You all won't mind if we skip my typos and get to the good stuff, will you?

Looking forward to Day 2 of the online unconference tomorrow, my speed demo, and hopefully some good follow up discussions after.

Takeaways from today’s thoughts, although my brain is filled with all kinds of tangents right now:

  1. Onboarding new devs sucks. There’s way too many assumptions of what developers are supposed to know before they write a single line of code. There’s cultural hostility towards things people barely take the time to learn about or understand. There’s not really much of a welcoming committee for new devs. Sash’s experience definitely came up here.

I appreciate @pcottle's entreaty to the attendees of the to engage with the Threads team genuinely.

Meta/Facebook have a mixed track record when it comes to open formats/standards (fool me once, etc etc); but at the same time, ushering in 130M potential new users to an open, social web is also an opportunity not to be dismissed out of hand.

I am optimistic that the current team is showing up with good intent and I intend to reflect that.

video/mp4

jdp23,

I'm also optimistic that the people on the current team are showing up in the fediverse with good intent and genuinely want to make the integration work. However, as a company is going to pursue its own interests, and just as ruthlessly as any other company of their size. We all know AP has its shortcomings. Meta can add a lot of value (to users, to developers) by extending it -- and in fact they probably will have to, just to make things work at the scale they're likely to have and to avoid the kinds of user confusion we take for granted in today's fediverse ("oh yeah you don't see all the responses to a post, it depends on these incredibly complicated rules that different software sometimes implements differently"). So embrace-and-extend is a given, and if it's in Meta's business interests to follow that by exploiting the ecosystem, then of course they well ... and if it turns out that AP can't overcome its current limitations, then of course Meta will look for another solution.

Like I said at today's session I think there are likely to be a lot of positives to Threads' arrival in the fediverse but anybody who kids themselves about who they're dealing with is setting themselves up for a very negative outcome as soon as they're not useful to Meta.

FediPact,
@FediPact@cyberpunk.lol avatar

i just really wanted fediforum peeps to know about FediPact since it seems like that's mentioned so much less when talking of meta's threads these days

there used to be whole articles about it, now "skepticism about threads joining the fediverse" is only ever mentioned in passing

it's almost like the uncomfortable contributions of marginalized women get swept aside and ignored consistently in life lol
