Odda's Chapel, Deerhurst. This is all and

https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/oddas-chapel/

This little chapel is one of the most complete Saxon churches surviving in England. It was built in 1056 so is pre-Norman. In the C17th it was incorporated into a farmhouse, because why wouldn't you?

No internal shots because it's not dramatic internally but if like me all your spidey senses start screaming in old bldgs then there's a lot to see.

Odda's Chapel, Deerhurst. View showing the opposite side of the Saxon chapel adjoining the timbered C17th farmhouse.

A historic view that is no longer. This is a power plant along Lake Springfield in Springfield, Missouri that was demolished in Feb 2022. I took this in Feb 2021 while standing on the frozen lake.

The Dime Building light well in Downtown #Detroit.

The Dime Building (also known as the Chrysler House) is one of Detroit’s oldest skyscrapers.

23 floors. Completed in 1912.

adamjcook,

@LK_Sass Thanks!

Not sure about the historic district designation as far as the City of #Detroit is concerned... I had assumed it already was (but I have only been in Detroit for about a year so I am still playing catch up 😅).

@adamjcook It’s an amazing city. Great comeback story (still with a ways to go, but don’t we all…). Lots of crazy history in those places!

#Detroit’s last free-standing synagogue, one of the most unique buildings in Detroit, just completed a $5.4 million renovation.

Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue.

And the building looks great.

It is absolutely wonderful that these #CommunityOutreach institutions and community staples are doubling down on Detroit’s future.

We need more of this.

This map from Historic Environment Scotland gives you an idea of just quite how many important historic buildings there are in Glasgow.

Pink dots: C Listed Buildings; Blue dots: B Listed Buildings; Red dots: A Listed Buildings.

In my opinion, there are also other important building which are not yet listed so the actual number will be even greater than this map suggests.

@AllyD That's really good! It's great to see if broken down my architect and really helps show that Glasgow is a lot more than just Alexander 'Greek' Thomson and Charles Rennie MacKintosh.

@AllyD Very well put! In my day job, I come across many organisations which find themselves ties into expensive licenced software products because they presumed they were the best and now cannot leave without losing access to all their data.

Happy !

Here we are with another edition of Adam Around - and, like last time, with 3 currently unoccupied buildings.

But as opposed to last time, these buildings likely have a soon-to-be bright future.

First up, is the Detroit Life Building on Park Avenue: https://historicdetroit.org/buildings/detroit-life-building

This building is planned to be renovated into residential units under the so-called "District Detroit" project which has received significant city and state financial backing.

adamjcook,

The last building on Adam's Park Avenue Tour (which can be seen in the above photograph to the right of this one) is the Women's City Club Building.

For the very interesting history of this building, check it out here: https://historicdetroit.org/buildings/women-s-city-club

The current District plan is that this building will become commercial space and I believe that it may be already partially renovated inside.

The white-stoned Kales Building can be seen on the right. The Kales Building is an apartment building.

I'm getting homesick!

Love these. Keep it up, Adam!

Here is a unique one that I snapped yesterday in .

This is from inside the original stairwell of the Kales Building (opened in 1914), looking out, at the stabilized facade that used to be part of the now-demolished Adams Theatre Building.

The facade and the Kales Building are shown here on Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.3362573,-83.0521193,171a,35y,351.23h,18.18t/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu

(I took special care when writing the for the image, so consider checking it out.)

adamjcook,

@wandrecanada Another interesting, but sad, tidbit...

The Hotel Charlevoix (SHAR-lə-voy) was demolished in 2013 by the infamous slumlord, Ralph Sacks.

There is video of its demolition: https://youtu.be/CIl0nAcQd-w

Since the Hotel Charlevoix was part of Detroit's historical district, Sacks could not tear it down (without permission from the city) when he acquired it in 1981.

So, Sacks sat on it until it literally fell apart.

Sacks' goal all along was to create a surface parking lot.

@wandrecanada@mastodon.social avatar

@adamjcook omg that's horrible! What a waste for everyone.

Doug Ford's destructive will negatively impact cities & towns, & villages across Ontario.

"In , heritage plays a large role in the region’s history and tourism. This can be seen in areas such as Niagara-on-the-Lake, which is reliant on heritage for their economy, as well as St. Catharines, whose historical architecture takes up a significant part of Niagara’s wine and industry."

@gemelliz That's one of the most awful things to me: that DoFo is using the housing crisis as opportunity for grift. Solving the crisis includes developers building housing, and pushing back against NIMBY excesses. But with the corruption surrounding it, then all housing-related actions become guilty by association.

Jgmeadows,
@Jgmeadows@mstdn.ca avatar

@PapyrusBrigade @gemelliz Every crisis (education, healthcare etc) is a profit opportunity for Ford’s owners. And they love how stupidly obedient he is.
