https://blog.commune.sh/weird-happenings/

After two months of development, a LOT has happened in the Weird project.

Weird is a web application built to increase the agency of internet users. We are building three interconnected pillars as our foundation:

  • Independent social sign-in rooted in the OIDC standard as keymaster
  • A personal web space creator
  • An actually-social network of shared purpose

In two weeks we're starting our pilot with the Norwegian Buddhist Foundation!

@erlend Looks exciting! I haven't been following any of this... but have been wanting a way to send my friends digital letters through some kind of web interface that would ideally be e2e encrypted. Is that the kind of thing that could be built with this stuff?

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@saul we’re more of a facilitator for that kind of thing. Weird can help make the initial connection, but the message transmission would be left to any of a number of E2EE messengers we’d defer to (by integration), like , , , etc.

Proving your identity online is NOT an easy task.
https://keybase.io is a possible option.

Do you know other solutions?

osma, to Cybersecurity

I'm ever so slightly annoyed (= raging mad) that #Helsinki IT has managed to leave the personal details of every #school age kid, their parents, and every city employee on an unsecured network drive, allowed them to be stolen, and now is trying to wiggle out of the responsibility to inform every impacted person (= just about everyone) or offer anything but stupid generalities as protection for #identity #theft.
#cybersecurity fail of the year. Perhaps several.

osma,

120k or so kids and youth. All their parents/guardians. 40k employees. Unspecified job applicants. Names, addresses, social security numbers (or personal IDs, as they're now called). Home languages, religious affiliations, nationalities.

All stolen at once, because some criminally negligent idiot had NO PROTECTION for any data in place.

#identitytheft #helsinki

osma,

The city dares to say that "those affected should take steps to protect their identity". What's to protect, you already exposed it all?! Besides, no identity protection services cover minors, so half the people impacted have nothing to lean to.

You. Fucking. Idiots.

This interview is a real gut punch.

"I didn't realize until years later, thinking back about that, was I was three years old. I lived with my birth mother, and then I didn't anymore.

And I was a three year old. I was talking to her. I forgot over [00:27:00] a while, over time what I was doing. And in the book I talk about it that way. I forgot what I was doing, but I kept doing it. And in, the way that I forgot my name, I had no idea what my name was and I had to find it."

An entrepreneur -- who doesn't yet want to be publicly identified -- ran a session here at #IIW why he's pivoting his company out of the #SSI Self-sovereign Identity / #VC Verifiable Credential space after years of trying to make a business there.

It was extremely interesting and I hope he will publish his lessons learned both for the #identity community and any new technology market really that has similar challenges.

P.S. Much resonated with my reasons why I never got deep into SSI myself.
