BARONESS' GINA GLEASON Reveals Her Favorite Non-Metal Solo & Her Guitar Icons
"I think I owe a lot to Kirk Hammett because I learned a lot from him."
Have you done the Spotify submit for editorial brass ring on the merry-go-round? I have. I laugh to myself and go "as if" when seeing "fierce" among the mood options.
Not for this one though.
"Lying to Me"
Real new, and won't be released before March, 2024. (And it is an open question as to if or when I stop giving Spotify my tracks to play for a dozen people without license fee payments to me.)
3 cool indie punk/garage type things for this week!
The Dwarves new record Concept Album comes out this Friday (November 17) and they just put out a KILLER new 2nd single and video from it, "Terrorist of Love". See/hear it here: https://youtu.be/DJ_cUDwNUog?si=jKDDGLu9vXs7lZzm.
First released as a double 7”, then on CD on 4AD, and a few months later in the U.S. on Geffen Records.
By far their best album, though I suspect casual fans may not be as familiar with this one as their third album, “Retreat From The Sun”.
So many fun, well constructed songs featuring truly beautiful voices singing about things like Shakey’s Pizza, Zodiac signs, and having your area code changed. Very SoCal.
The harmonizing vocals of the Haden sisters and Anna Waronker (married to Steve McDonald of Redd Kross!) are the main draw for me. Best example is the track “Punk Rock Girl”, but you can hear it in the punky indie-pop opening track “Old Timer” 👇
For #MusicWomenWednesday -- Devan Theos is my all-time favorite female singer. And she also plays drums in Off Peak Arson (and her previous band Ten High). She splits singing duties with Matt Thornton (also in both bands). They're an incredible songwriting pair.
I've gone on about both bands on here before. "Vivid" is a nice kind of lighter shoegazey track. Sometimes Ten High/OPA go hard and heavy, but this one is more chill. Check it!
Released in 1997, "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is a standout track from The Verve's third album, "Urban Hymns." Its iconic string motif, reflective lyrics, and Richard Ashcroft's distinctive vocals made it a defining anthem of the '90s.
Bandcamp Friday is this Friday (when all money goes to artists) and I'm fairly broke after rent, but I may grab something TINY or two just for a kick. Not sure yet. I've been thinking about it all month (and knew I'd be broke).
Uh, so if you weren't aware that Hum made a new album 3 years ago like I somehow wasn't (thanks again @bflipp for the heads up), it's here on Bandcamp, and of course it's amazing, 23 years later -- they're fuckin HUM.
Discovered this KILLER local Arizona band the other day called Gemm- they kinda remind me of Hum or Catherine Wheel in that kinda 90s/early 2000s heavy, guitarry super melodic rock way. And the dude's voice is great. Are they shoegazey? Maybe. But not super slow. They're really worth a listen.
Ah, the sound of my college years. Perfectly representative album of the developing indie scene of the time (e.g. Doolittle came out around this time)
This is when I started appreciating more mellow music. Probably because on this album they somehow make loud guitars and full throated vocals sound relaxing and dreamy. Lots of reverb and a rather melancholy vibe throughout.
Favorite song by far is the opening track, “Blue Thunder”. But this is another album that I’ve slowly found is best played all the way through, as each track blends seamlessly into the next.
Albums I have my eye on that are coming out this month or next:
