Here, you see, are two kinds of work - one good, the other bad; one not far removed from a blessing, a lightening of life; the other a mere curse, a burden to life.
What is the difference between them, then? This: one has hope in it, the other has not...
worthy work carries with it the hope of pleasure in rest, the hope of pleasure in our using what it makes, and the hope of pleasure in our daily creative skill.
All other work but this is worthless; it is slaves' work - mere toiling to live, that we may live to toil.
Tech companies usually want you to believe technology will improve anything, including managing humans. That’s not the story we’re witnessing. 👀 #InternationalWorkersDay
Algorithmic management and workplace surveillance can come with very real and harmful consequences, from breach of fundamental rights to job loss.
Have a lovely #Beltane or #InternationalWorkersDay! If you don't celebrate the former, be sure to celebrate the latter, because now more than ever, we must remember how hard it was to win the worker rights we have today, and fight hard to win more! ✊️
Also worth sharing, on why "the U.S. and Canada celebrate their Labor Day in September":
"The ruling class did not want to have a very active labor force connected internationally," said Peter Linebaugh, author of The Incomplete, True, Authentic, and Wonderful History of May Day. "The principle of national patriotism was used against the principle of working-class unity or trade union unity."
Good morning and Happy Wednesday / May / International Workers' Day.
The United States is one of the only countries in the world to not acknowledge International Workers' Day / Labor Day on May Day / May 1st. The active denial of comradery by the US of American laborers with our international allies is definitely purposeful. Even as the date was selected based on a historic strike in the US.
We should acknowledge the struggle of the labor movement and workers across the globe.
Have a wonderful Wednesday / International Workers' Day.
WEEK 31: Absolute joy down at the completely blockaded Department for Trade, as protesters sing "I believe that we will win" to the rozzers on the other side of the road.
In Times of Progress if enough workers are unhappy they go on strike.
They'll demand extra Food to go back to work. You can accept or send the police to stop the strike (production resumes immediately but with reduced productivity).
Also, will you let them unionize?
It means more likely strikes and more expensive workers, but also increased productivity.
