👷🏽♀️🧑🏿⚕️👨🏼🏭 Today is International Workers Day #IWD, an occasion to celebrate workers’ rights and an opportunity to air economic grievances and political demands.
So, how are working conditions around the world?
🧵We looked into our #GVarchive to share some of our best coverages.
Good morning and Happy Wednesday / May / International Workers' Day.
The United States is one of the only countries in the world to not acknowledge International Workers' Day / Labor Day on May Day / May 1st. The active denial of comradery by the US of American laborers with our international allies is definitely purposeful. Even as the date was selected based on a historic strike in the US.
We should acknowledge the struggle of the labor movement and workers across the globe.
Have a wonderful Wednesday / International Workers' Day.
Marie Laeng-Stucki (1905–74) 1 of most powerful female #Swiss entrepreneurs. With husband Fritz, "Mama Laeng" founded Lenco vinyl turntables in 1946. 1,300 staff had a pension scheme, sports teams, a library, cashless salary payments, flexible work hours & accident prevention - all before Swiss women got vote in 1971

Happy to have been an ally to my female colleagues sharing some past experience that we believed at SKAO to be helpful to getting better candidates: just ask for what the position really needs, don’t look for unicorns.
The #IWD keynote at my company made claims on women being better at e.g. multitasking. And the personal story talk on the event on women being better at empathy.
We’re individuals and I would like to stop projecting characteristics on entire demographies. And just appreciate that there are so many people of all genders showing empathy and having these kinds of traits more accepted for anyone. .

We tell everyone we're going to the IWD event, and we effusively praise the merits of the outstanding female speaker and her/their novel take on reaching equality and equity.
Then we take 2 hours for ourselves to have a coffee, read a book, and NOT do non-promoteable performative #DEI work while we have a gender pay gap of 15%.
@KathyReid update: we did it! Everyone (all genders) came to the cafe at 4pm and we had nice drinks (strawberry and basil iced tea was popular - it was 30°C out) and I donated $200 to Beryl - Australia’s longest running DV crisis shelter, run by an Aboriginal woman, and one of the Canberra NGOs that has my heart. Happy #IWD 💖
