The arbitrary 8.5-9 hour workday drives me nuts, because a lot of the time, I really only have 3 or 4 hours worth of work to do. I generally work quickly and I value my time. Can I make a decent living doing something that gives me this kind of flexibility?
Well, it looks like I'm once again in a ranting mood, so here we go.
Have you ever tried to get a job as a disabled person? Of course you did. Everyone tries. Some succeed, a lot of us don't.
The truth is that society is unprepared for us disabled people having jobs. Of course there are programs that give money to companies hiring disabled people. But in a lot of cases this isn't enough of an insentive to ever bother with us. Did you know about 90% of blind people are unemployed? Yeah, that's a lot, I know. So here's the story of me trying to get a job, so far. I expect this to be yet another big thread, fair warning. #blind#disability#job
There’s a paid internship offer with the Greens in Brussels that needs #Guix and #Guile skills: https://www.greens-efa.eu/en/get-involved/work-with-us — I thought you may be interested. Deadline for application: 31 May, 23:59 CET — info about needed skills is from an email of a green elected: Internal toolchain development, debugging or maintenance, using Guile Scheme, Guix, PHP (Drupal / CiviCRM), bash, postgres, sqlite and similar technologies #job
So, I've found a new job. It's great, right? Yes and no.
I got hired to do various sysadmin tasks by a non profit organisation for the blind. The good news is that the one who hired me is also blind, and seems really cool and nice. She's also aware of the accessibility challenges, so that's one major plus for getting this job.
I'm glad I've got the job, despite the tons of issues that piled up so far, like the fact the server I'm trying to get is still not done and the provider seems to have super strange problems with their cloud-init handling.
But there's someone on this job, someone who I knew years ago and which I actively disliked and found mildly creepy. And I find him even more so now. #job#nonbinary#ranting#transgender

I know I don't shut up about this but frankly not enough #people are angry about the 5-day/40 hour workweek (and I am AWARE a lot of people #work even more than that). I feel like a lot more people should be absolutely furious that we only really have two days a week and some occasional hours in the evening to socialise, run errands, do chores, or relax.
It's no wonder so many people are profoundly lonely and disconnected from their #communities when maintaining a social life in what little free time we have is incredibly difficult. If you have kids, a second #job, a very long commute, or other responsibilities, it's nearly impossible.
We literally aren't meant to live like this and I'll never stop being shocked how many people just take it as the natural state of things and don't want to throw a brick through a #billionaire's window every time they think of it.
So I had additional talk with my boss yesterday about my resignation. And oh boy, so many red flags, huh?
80% of this talk was him talking being poor and stuff and government making things hard for him which while partially true (I am also not a fan of our government and my father have very small company so I know problems associated with having business) it is still not my business and in my opinion is highly inappropriate to talk about it in this situation.
I am still hiring for top-tier programmers and data scientist. Please reboost, share, recommend, or reply if you know anyone who might be interested.
Fully remote! Live and work from anywhere with internet (including the beach!)
I am the company owner, and will be both your direct boss and the hiring manager.
Semantic Web, AI, and Java are some of the key techs. Open-source and Linux oriented experience ideally. OSS contributions and activity will be weighted heavily, particularly in relevant areas.
I am truly amazed at the number of applicants I have seen off of this single post. And almost all are well suited candidates worth my time to review. I am astonished that a single post on the fedi is more effective than actually hiring a recruiter. Thank you everyone for the boosts and applications.
While many applicants have made it through and are currently being hired because we have so many positions we have quite a few still available for every level from sr to jr, and both data scientists and programmers. So please keep boosting, sharing, and applying if anyone is interested.
Just a reminder this is 100% remote, no fixed hours, will pay market rates for position. I will be your direct boss and hiring manager (also owner, founder, and inventor of the tech).
I got spared from being laid off for reasons I still consider odd. Here's the back story.
At my employer, I had been part of a group that pursued its own clients and maintained profitability even when other parts of the company had challenges. My coworkers and I kept utilization levels between 90 and 110 percent. If you are utilized, you are making money. This all got disturbed by an internal merger...
Eigene Kinder + eigener Kleingarten + eigene Technik > 100% Auslastung.

If you would like to submit yourself for an interview, which for a limited time I am guaranteeing you will get a first stage interview, then you can submit your application here, and even schedule your interview as you apply!
For those of you who cant schedule during core hours you can even schedule in my free time if you’d like a chance (the company doesnt have fixed hours):
i know people might be hesitant in sending their resume on a third-party platform, talk to me directly if that's a concern, we can either track you separately or add you manually.
also absolutely let me know if you had trouble submitting your application, we're hopefully going to start contacting people for interviews next week or so.
my focus on this hire is to find some skilled person who will help diversify our team, and so far we've had a lot of white dudes apply, so if you've been hesitant because you lack the self-confidence, skill set, or anything else, still give it a shot, and make sure you give us a good reason to hire you in your cover letter :) even if you don't quite fit all requirements, i typically at least read the resume and cover letter
