Yesterday at several of us cleaned and organized the electronics room. You can see the change side by side. Come by to see it yourself.

I’ve seen locations that have shared computer resources. They may be for devices like 3D printers, or have a specific software suite on them.

Is there a “safest way” to get files BOTH on and OFF of these machines that are shared?

Just using a thumbdrive seems super unsafe, and I wouldn’t want to log in directly to a cloud account. Google Drive links work one way but editing is heavily limited and a “guest” cannot upload arbitrary files.

  1. I won the volunteer monthly drawing at the member meeting tonight. Yay another Amazon gift card. This one probably WILL go to filament.

  2. Took a nice walk with Howie tonight even if it did start with me using the dog as an excuse to get away from my chatty neighbor

  3. Comfy pajama pants

I finally finished putting together my sewing station and I also upgraded my electronics workbench. It's looking so damn cute ✨🛠️✨

Okay okay okay so my 3D printer is still broken, but is it even a real workshop if you don't have at least one broken 3D printer?

I now supervise 3 young (<25yr) students on different numerical projects, from master to PhD, we exchange and discuss codes daily.

It is quite striking that these new "native digital" (term allowed for people born in ~2000?) actually have HUGE gaps, and it's not their fault (neither is mine).

Examples:

  • "it doesn't work" - with 0 attached error message, plot, information.

  • assuming a .exe compiled on a machine would just work elsewhere (like an app?).

@franco_vazza @frameworkcomputer There is a generational bit in there, that I'm more than aware of. But, some of this does erode skills at a more basic level I would argue (as in mindset). The advent of LLMs doesn't help with this either.

The thing is, when considering the and there hasn't been a nicer time to put things together with affordable 3D printers and laser cutters, PCB services and git(lab/hub) version control to share things.

What's this? York Hackspace has joined the fediverse?

Are you in York and want access to a workshop full of tools and machines to make stuff? Well what a coincidence! that's exactly what York Hackspace is!

We'd love some boosts to help us find more of the hackspace community here on the fediverse ❤️

  1. Got a refresher on using the rotary tool on the lasers at the today. Engraved two mugs. They didn't turn out perfect but that's okay.

  2. Had $3 on my Target account so was able to get a pizza for dinner for almost free.

  3. Laying in bed with Howie on my legs is really comforting right now.

Ten years ago today. November 23, 2013.

In 2014, we named this thing The Orbiterator. But in '13, it was just the launcher, or the slingshot.

It had been an intense 3 week build period. That's a kitchen colander to hold the pumpkin, and a vast amount of half inch bungee cords. (12mm)

Perfectly timed photo of a launch. I think @laprice snapped this shot.

I was looking at the trigger, so I never saw where the pumpkin went.

A fraction of a second later, I was looking for the pumpkin. These photos don't capture how the launcher jumps when it fires (but see the upcoming video).

The trigger mechanism was the hardest part. This was the third iteration (in three weeks). We continued to refine it through the life of the Orbiterator, but this was a working solution. That ring was definitely overstressed. It started out round.

The big nails were pounded into the ground in a vain attempt to keep the launcher from kicking.

We looked smug, didn't we? I am second from the right in the first photo, second from the left in the second.

You can't really see them, but we had little embroidered logos on our team jackets. "Team Low Earth Orbit", with a little flying pumpkin.

The trophy was a plastic trick-or-treat bucket spray painted gold. Maximally tacky, in a good way.

🧵8/N

Team photo, admiring the trophy. The trophy was intentionally cheesy. it’s a plastic jack-o-lantern trick-or-treat bucket and crown on two pillars. Everything is spray painted gold.

There's no shame in not finishing your hobby projects. Worrying about that is pointless.

There is still benefit in finishing projects. The Cult of Done Manifesto has a brilliant 13th entry: "Done is the engine of more".

By finishing things, you'll inspire more work, you gain momentum and you can get feedback that feeds into creating more.

I love that phrasing.
