It's Friday the 13th, but do you know what's really scary? The thought of someone (or perhaps countless someones) reading your emails. If this thought scares you, too, then you might be interested in reading our Email Self-Defense Guide. https://u.fsf.org/10r Inform yourself, protect yourself.

I see a lot of posts here about why the other social media platforms are terrible & #Mastodon is the one to rule them all*.

Personally, Mastodon is my favorite & I prefer the #fediverse with decentralized servers & open source standards.

But I also don’t mind coexisting with the others. Rather, I think it’s a good thing. All of us should settle in where we feel comfortable & find community.

  • Overstatement, but a Tolkien reference always seems appropriate.

Well allows encrypted and unencrypted rooms - your choice. And to be fair so did XMPP before messed it up.

still allows rooms to be encrypted with if I remember - and there are some clients that allow

and both allow encrypted rooms in XMPP. Matrix just makes it easier.

Even had but not many people used it. Encrypted chat rooms are very old.

chiefgyk3d, (edited ) to DEFCON

I'll be at though I will be mostly focused on learning, of course I will be wanting to network with people. I'll have limited access to and while there. Also don't forget to sign your emails and load them on a keyserver. My PGP is in my links and fingerprint is on the back of my cards. Come over and say hi if you find me, if I'm awkward it's not you it's me, I'll probably just be processing a lot.

jz, to Signal

Problems we are having with :

  • It is and will remain centralized (clear strategy of not federating servers)
  • It requires strong identifiers/selectors (phone#) to use
  • Author disallows distribution by anyone but Google, although free/libre
  • It keeps pushing away verification of fingerprint in interface
  • It relies on Google+Amazon infrastructure
  • Its funding is shady (OTF = Radio Free Asia = USG)

= clearly unethical choices, unjustifiable by accessibility or technological reasons.

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@jz @nblr Eeyupp...

All shit that or any other + or /MIME - compatible client just doesn't do.

@signalapp in my eyes is at best begging to be infiltrated like if not outright a like !

DON'T USE IT!
DON'T ADVOCATE FOR IT!
TELL OTHERS TO DO THE SAME!
