Northern edge of the plateau on huge boulders. note the circular hole from ancient water flow vortices. Altitude +-550m. #peakdistrict#hiking#nature#landscape
Despite the high winds, we decided to risk a little walk up West Nab yesterday, which is one of the highest peaks in the peak district (500m above sea level). As we got the top, it suddenly started hailing and it was just so immediately chaotic that it was hilarious and we laughed as we walked all the way back down the way we came #peakdistrict#meltham#yorkshire
Some of the most well-known parts of the Peak District: Winnats Pass and Mam Tor.
An unreasonably hot October's day gave us the opportunity to fully take in this 8 km circular hike, clambering up through Winnats Pass gorge and then up onto Mam Tor.
Absolutely lush #moss on a very beautiful dry stone wall in #Derbyshire in honour of #Mosstodon and #mossmonday These beauties were a short walk from Hope Station. A dry stone wall is one built without any mortar to hold it together. They are typically found in upland areas where there are Rocky outcrops to provide the building material. This lovely example is from England’s Peak District. #peakdistrict
I took a damp and foggy walk around Surprise View and Bolehill this morning, and this shot is from the first location.
I very much expected the heather to be well past its best by now, but there was a wonderful amount of purple still around. Combined with the rich greens of the leaves and grass, and soft silver of the mist and bark, it makes for a very pleasing colour palette.
Bonus stones for #StandingStoneSunday - the wonderful Nine Stones Close in the Peak District.
Four tall stones remain of this ring, the tallest of any of the Peak District's many stone circles. It has a visual interrelationship with Robin Hood's Stride, a gritstone tor described by Aubrey Burl as resembling a hippopotamus.
