The Peewee’s Playhouse Christmas Special is one of my family’s regular Christmas movies, we watch it several times each December. The amount of creativity and art is staggering, and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse was always sure to be inclusive with casting. I hope you all have a very merry Christmas/holiday and a very happy new year! Last evening Arianna & I were discussing Paul Reubens and his passing.
I said to her that I really didn't know the actor, that I had never watched Pee Wee Herman, and wondered if I had even seen anything I would know him from.
She looked at me, and said: "Mystery Men. He was The Spleen"!
Truly didn't know that.
I did like that character role. #PaulRuebens#PeeWeeHerman#MysteryMen#TheSpleen
Anyone else absolutely wrecked by the loss of Paul Reubens? Pee-wee's Playhouse was such a safe, liberating space for me as a kid, & I've always admired Paul's seemingly superhuman resiliency, his maniacal brand of kindness, his revolutionary sensibility for sassy nonsense. I'll miss the chaotic good he brought to this world so much. It's a crooked horizon, honestly, without the weirdo icon I've adored for almost 40 years. He was my favorite. Ice cream soup forever. 💙
One more #PeeWeeHerman story: When I was in high school, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure was not an old movie. Also, I was a cheerleader all four years (not one of the popular kids mind you, but we didn't have a dance team). Our pep band decided to play "Tequila" at basketball games. Since I came up with most of the routines for the pep band songs, I made the whole squad (all "popular" girls + me) stand at half court and do The Dance. It's among my finest moments. #RIPPaulReubens#RIPPeeWee
If there’s one show the epitomizes all that is pee wee, it’s the Christmas Special. The introduction alone is worth a watch. And yes, all the special guest stars truly made an appearance on the show.
You can watch the whole episode on the internet archive. The secret word is..
I want to share some of my #PeeWeeHerman - inspired art.
Pee-Wee was a huge influence on my aesthetics, my sense of humor, even my sense of self, who I was, who I wanted to be, and how I wanted to move through this world.
.
Thank you, #PaulRubens , always & forever.
This was my holiday card a few years ago, based on the scene from Pee-Wee's Christmas Special when #AnnetteFunicello asks The King of Cartoons if she can introduce the cartoon!
