Working on my son's prom outfit today.

They're gonna be rocking a corset, combat boots, and this skirt which is covered in flowers and will have a tulle bubble skirt over it.

Dude is gonna ROCK it.
(son is NB and uses they/he)

Now I just have to glue down all the flowers and vines...

A Juki sewing machine is on with some black fabric ready to be sewn. There are various sewing notions like racks of thread and a bowl of Wonder Clips.
A black half circle skirt is spread out on a table. It is covered in white flowers and green vines.

Against a backdrop of anti-trans bills and hatred, a group of teens arranged Trans Prom, which took place yesterday in Washington D.C. Here's a look at the night of celebration, joy and pride, which was attended by 150 people from 16 states.

20 days to prom, Youngest is essentially cosplaying Radio Rebel. I'm on sewing duty.

I need motivation/support/shame, so time to do a thread.

Today, tracing the pattern (top) onto wax paper.

Sew center back seam.

Reader, she sewed the side seams together.

I learned that using a really long stitch on my mock-up makes ripping really fast!

I bought way too much fabric for prom cos play, but when have I ever not over-bought cosplay fabric? (Oz. Zelda. Korra. Skull kid. Yes.)

Top modified <wheeze> and cut. Red shell, black lining.

One week to prom, and instead of playing Zelda, I finished the top.

It is imperfect but it is something much better: it is done.

Bonus warm up project: a bag made from scraps, some literally off the floor (my scrap bag overfloweth)

Closeup of a drawstring square bag, resting on top of a very silky red top. The bag is cotton patchwork, scrappy style, irregular, squares and rectangles and strips, in a variety of colors (blue, yellow, green print, black polka-dot). 8x8 inches.

Cut the fabric, including the all important pockets, and put in tailor tacks. So easy and they feel so elegant.

Sewing tomorrow because black fabric after 9pm is a hard nope. (Memories of poofy pants of doom for the Bleach cosplay. Brrrrrr.)

The Radio Rebel cosplay looks like a real dress!

The waistline, sob, is too too low. One emergency fix was a fail. I'll try again tomorrow. There will be a wide belt that I hope will hide a multitude of sins.

Emergency deep pleat to save the waistline of the Radio Rebel prom cosplay. 6 inches of pleat (15 cm). The sequined belt will be very important to cover it, wheeze.

It looks so much more even than yesterday's attempt. Time to go buy a zipper.

March 5: Someone named Scott for

Despite its sensationalist pulpy title and premise, Jack Arnold's adaptation of the novel is an existentialist treatise.

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) plays with the understanding of what it means to be acknowledged as a human, and one's place in the world. The story is told through the eyes of the titular Shrinking Man – Scott Carey – who after being exposed to strange fog, finds himself increasingly lost in this world.

It's phenomenal and I can only recommend it.

March 11: a (positively awkward) for

Frederick Wiseman is the fly-on-the-wall at Northeast High School, filming teenage angst and awkwardness. There's talk of , and small dramas when it turns out that above-the-knee is not formal wear thankyouverymuchyounglady. The dance itself is never shown. This is High School (1968). I'm glad I never have to set foot in one ever again.
