"It's a good idea to put your country's flag in your profile so they can quickly know where you're from. IE, don't presume you're from a certain country."
Me, wondering if they'd recognise my country's flag or ... think it's American
Are QR code payments common in the #US and #Eurooe or #Australia? I really like to know, so do tell me.
"For the past several years, the central banks of these countries have been attempting to connect their systems, allowing their residents to use QR payments for cross-border transactions without any fees, generally at better conversion rates than those set by payment processors like Visa and American Express."
Xinyu Wen traveled to Thailand in June, planning a two-week vacation around Bangkok’s Pride parade. But the 28-year-old ended up staying a month and a half, soaking up the Thai capital’s thriving LBGTQ+ community.
I am the only one in my family who speaks Mandarin. My parents and I speak Hokkien. My siblings are complete 🍌
How I came to know two Chinese languages is through an accident of geography - I spent my growing up years in Penang and Johor. Penang's main Chinese language is Hokkien and Johor it is Mandarin.
I am not sure why my siblings didn't pick up Cantonese as they grew up in Selangor 🤔
Another funny thing about being #Chinese with wavy hair. When I was in school, students were not allowed to perm their hair. When my hair got noticeably curlier after I hit 13, it was regularly fondled by the prefects to see if I was wearing hair gel/mousse. Of course some accused me of perming my hair, but fortunately it got nowhere. #Malaysian schools were really draconian weren't they? 😅😆
I'm starting to wonder if "Kuala Lumpur is not what I expected!" is some kind #Youtube SEO hack. 😆
I mean it's nice & cute that they are so amazed we are so modern, green and developed, but after a while I wonder if people are actually exaggerating for clicks.
yeah, I'm cynical lol
PS: The latest video I'm watching - the Youtubers were SO AMAZED our trains have....
toilets.
So I finally had a taste of this super famous egg tart that everyone queues up for.
All I can say is... Thank god I didn't queue up an hour for this.
I mean it's good lah, but it remains a mystery why people would queue up in long lines for this. 🤷♀️
Interesting discussion between #Chinese educated Chinese and #English educated Chinese aka "bananas" 🍌.
I belong to the latter group and have always felt like an inferior Chinese in Selangor (my state) because I couldn't speak fluent #Cantonese and so-so #Mandarin. The only place I really felt like I belonged was in Penang where people spoke my dialect & I am one of the dwindling numbers that speak it.
Out for a walk. Now sitting at the stairs area of an office building with a cup of chilled Americano. I am thinking this is exactly how I want my life to be. To me, success is being able to live the life you want and I consider myself successful. No debt, a simple life, with a very naughty cat to take care of, and vegetables growing at my balcony.
And as I was typing this bird shit literally landed on my head.
I hear that's good luck 😂
Also nearly spat out my coffee when he said that the countries in the region had "the same culture and values". (Yet he mentioned they were diverse too, weird.)
Dude we are so culturally and ideologically dissimilar that Western think tanks predicted we would be at war a few years after the end of the Vietnam War.
That's why you shouldn't get your info from YouTube 😂
To think that if I was born a century earlier, I would probably be dancing this dance and hiding behind screens, giggling as my parents arrange a match for me with some unknown Baba I have never met. Shudders.
These are the movies being shown in one of our cinemas. I really like how diverse it is,and how we have movies from around the globe. Not all, but quite a bit of it 😁
Am curious about cinema showings in your country. Is it as diverse? What countries' films are usually shown?
A great video to help me understand American discourse on politics, especially what I am seeing on #socialmedia.
Western - linear thinking
Chinese - lateral thinking
And oh dear, I think like China's people 😆
I mean, I am Chinese, so unavoidable - this way of thinking is deeply embedded in our culture.
However, I also can see the Western pov in terms of politics.
The gift of being in #SouthEastAsia which I am grateful for.
The funny thing about Malaysians is that we are so used to thinking our country sucks that when folks say otherwise we think they have an ulterior motive and are trying to butter us up 😆
I've lived a couple of years abroad and have travelled extensively. I have come to realise every country has its problems. We in Malaysia, for one, take for granted our relative peace from conflict and natural disasters.
To those who have been regularly using the tags #TootSEA and #MYToots and #MakanApaToday alongside your other tags (thank you!), I can confirm that the kbin mag @magASEAN will include your posts into the microblog as long as one of those tags is the first tag on your post. You can also @ the mag (and it has to be the first @ in the post)
Until the backend changes so that the scanning will be just agnostic as other fedi protocols (which is how we can follow hashtags so well), that's the current state of things. But in any case, feel free to add yourself, as long as you have a threadiverse account (such as a Lemmy one) you can post there as well. All fedi accounts of course can follow and comment anyway (just with a little bit more friction). #SoutheastAsia#fediverse
Recently discovered Kishore Mahbubani and boy he doesn't mince his words - gets straight to the point. 😅 Even the titles of his books are confronting.
I learned that Western thinkers expected Asia and SEA to be in war after the cold war ended & we defied their predictions 🤭 Fascinating.
I was looking for geopolitics thought leaders in #SouthEastAsia and he popped up.
If you have any other authors from SEA or Asia let me know!
Common criticism found about #BRICS from Western thought leaders and pundits: "They all have different ideologies! It will never work!" Looks at ASEAN 👀
"You all look alike" may not be politically correct but let's admit it, it's kinda true, especially in the East Asian region. In this video everyone had a challenging time telling which country they belong to. It is sort of like, how do you tell an Italian from A German or Frenchman?
Ps: Their Korean rocks! Wish I could speak it so well.
Yesterday, randomly came across a #Cdrama where someone needed a super rare blood type. Super tickled that they had to fly over the blood from #Malaysia to save that person.
Eh dei, as far as I know there is only a number of blood types and unless we have mutant nasi lemak blood pretty sure you can find that rare blood type from among the billions of people in #China 😂
Malaysians are so mysterious people think we have magic blood lol.
My favourite type of nasi lemak is the simplest one - the type that can fit in your hand and doesn't have any chicken or other meat. Something really lovely about the simplicity.
