Curious to know, how many columns do you set up on apps/clients that allow multi-columns? (Mastodon advanced web interface, Ivory macOS, Mona macOS, @sengi_app , @statuzer , @mastodeck , #TheDesk , Phanpy )
It’s been almost 3 months since #Threads joined the Fediverse family. A quick overview of what changed since then:
The hordes of Nazi/homophobic users from the outside world into our safe islands are nowhere to be seen. I was insulted multiple times a couple of months ago, along the lines of “if you don’t proactively defederate Threads then you’re an asshole who does nothing to protect the marginalized minorities on the Fediverse from the outside world!“. Well, guess what, it turns out that not everyone outside of our comfort zone is a pathological jerk craving for psychological abuse. It turns out that the minorities police over-reacted. And it turns out that the whole Fedipact thingy was probably collective hysteria.
The Threads-Fedi sync is still an opt-in feature, and only available to accounts in selected countries. And posting responses from the Fediverse to a Threads post isn’t supported yet. I’m not sure if they are ever going to change that, but given the lack of announcements in these months I’m wondering if anybody at Meta is even bothering to work on this integration, or if it was just about another loud announcement for what was a time-bound experiment with no follow-ups.
Threads itself, after reaping the initial novelty benefits, is losing momentum. No E-E-E on the horizon for now.
Result: I added a couple of Threads accounts to my list, I see their content on my timeline every now and then as if they were just another Fediverse instance (but one that I can’t directly interact with), end of the story.
Who did/do you follow from #xitter via https://bird.makeup that is now also on #threads and enabling federation, such that you can switch your following method? Not sure I can point to anyone that fit this pattern for me :( #SocialWeb
Meta updates the version of #Instagram and #Threads with new options (respectively the one to automatically post to Threads and that to federate Threads with Fediverse), but again none of these are allowed in Europe.
Why do they think followers are not all the same?
This is from posting pretty much solely on #MECFS , #LongCovid and related conditions and to a lesser extent chronic illness in general, which shows it is possible to build up followings on them, in case people either gave up on them or never tried.
yes but it would be better to be able to engage with the journalists. I wish the #threads folks would recognize that no algos for any kinds of content is the way to go. I actually want the conservatives I disagree with here too. and all of them on their own news org servers. someday.
Kind of creepy: Even though I have #Threads blocked as an instance, I can fully see and even interact with all accounts (and they with me???). At least I can see my test interactions on the #Mastodon interface.
Blocking in Mastodon is a bad joke. It just takes the stuff out of the mentions. 🙄
Sorry I missed your AMA. Did anyone ask about progress on federating with the Fediverse? Seems like it could easily be starved of resources given what else is going on.
"every single terrible thing you see on facebook — be it some sort of horrible right wing nonsense or a confusing and annoying product decision — is made in pursuit of growth. every bit of damage that meta has caused to the world has been either an act of ignorance or deliberate harm"
When I heard #threads was gonna federate, I got hopeful. all the journalists and politicians might leave #xitter for a place that can also provide them a huge audience but with less assholes. and we will slowly get them to go independent as they recognize that controlling their work doesn't require losing their followers etc. enough people do that and it gets "locked open". we win.
so of course now #meta has to tell them politics won't get the algo boost there...
What a pleasant surprise to have found an app (@openvibe) that aims to bring together all decentralized social networks in one! It saves you the trouble of having to post on each one separately. For now, it works with #Mastodon and #Nostr, but they plan to add #Bluesky and #Threads. Very good news! Check it out if you can. 😉
I visit Twitter maybe once a day & it amazes me that that place is basically one giant YouTube comments section... except that much of its content is absolutely critical to what I do.
There's simply no other place that publishes news & information from millions of sources in the same way. And no other social ecosystem has done ANYTHING to compel corporations & govt entities to contribute in the same way to their networks.
@kurtsh they definitely seem to be working on tweaking their algorithm because it's been a different experience every few weeks when I take another look around.
When they first launched, it was just absolute chaos. It felt like everyone talking at the same time. I literally got vertigo and noped outta there in 30 minutes.
Another visit some time later was nothing but engagement hacking and clickbait. Nope nope nope again.
More recently I've been seeing a lot of photography content. It was all from big accounts which I'm not interested in feeding.
This past weekend, I got hit with lots of photography threads again, but this time it was mostly small accounts and amateurs sharing tips and helping each other and that was really cool.
And then suddenly it was all about shaming the gay guy who had the misfortune of admitting he ate at Chick-Fil-A. I hit "not interested in this" and thankfully did not wander into that melee again.
My biggest #gripe with #Mastodon is reach and the ability to discover stuff outside of chronological scrolling. Lists in #BlueSky make that better. Imho the algorithms in #Threads are too intrusive.
If there were simpler ways to connect with different topics on here it would make it excellent, to me at least. I guess it might come down to why you use different social media.
