Trypillia Thermal Power Plant in Kyiv was completely destroyed by a Russian strike because Ukraine has run out of missiles to defend it, Zelenskyy says.
Although the first seven missiles were downed, the next four hit the plant.
In my latest YouTube video I use the phrase “the people is” several times. This has started quite a discussion in the comments section about whether or not that is grammatically correct. Some people insist it’s always “people are”, while others say that in this case “people is” is the right way. What’s right? Is there a nuance between British and American English here?
@anderspuck
To 90% of native English speakers "The people is" will sound Goofy, even if it's technically grammatically correct in the instance in which it's used.
If you saw #VladVexler's (English I presume is at least his second language, but I think his primary one?) video the other day, he says "The people ARE with me" like 4 times.
There's a similar phenomenon in the whole "gender/pronoun" thing. People who use third person plural pronouns to refer to a single individual (they/them) 1/2
Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in #Ukraine 's hands.
But Kharkiv remains within the range of #Russian artillery.
And here, amidst a constant low rumble, dozens of children are attending classes in an underground school built in haste for safety at a central metro station.
Abandoning Ukraine Could Spell Disaster for NATO

Disasters for European and #NATO countries will come first from not understanding #Putin's regime and second from the weakness of democracies at home that make them struggle to have a coherent and durable strategy abroad.

Vlad Vexler is a Russian born British philosopher, studying Putin's regime and #Russia 's (and Soviet) society for decades.
Listened to one of his recent chats and got multiple signals that he's anti-Democratic. This included an aside in defense of populism, as well as bashing Clinton by blaming her for Trump.
In this video, #VladVexler spends over half an hour talking about and around (but mostly around) the issue of whether "from the river to the sea" implies genocide or at least ethnic cleansing.
His conclusion is that it does sometimes but not other times and it depends who's saying it, sometimes, which isn't really a conclusion. He suggests that, due to this ambiguity, it's a poor choice, regardless.
#VladVexler knocks it out of the park with a #YouTube video on his main channel in which he dismantles the so-called #antiimperialist#left & #AltLeft arguments against #American aid to #Ukraine & #NATO blame for #Russia's invasion. TL;DR they fundamentally misunderstand #Putin's reasons for starting the war & are thus unable to grasp how to end it:
A 🧵 about how I got blocked by @kevinrothrock, managing editor of @meduza_en on not 1 but 2 social media platforms. This will be a familiar tale for other #fellas in the #Fediverse, but isn't just a story of a #NAFO#ShibaInu piling on someone for an unfortunate post.
Rather I'm sharing this as a lesson for other folks who are here to follow #news about #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine. This isn't an attack on Kevin, even if I say some mean things about him, but about bias expertise & trust 1/n
Interesting video from #VladVexler contrasting the wildly different motivations for #Ukraine'ian soldiers and #Russia'n mobiks & conscripts.
Long story short, Ukrainians understand they are under existential threat, while basically no one in Russia understands the reasons for the war beyond #Putin says it's necessary.
Vlad thinks this may impact morale & could set conditions for a rapid collapse of Russia's military.
@fulelo
Peter #Pomerantsev wrote a great book about this point (Nothing Is True and Everything Is Possible)! #MaxKatz talks about this quite a bit as well. I forget who coined the term, but #Putin's #Russia is often described as an #InformationalAutocracy. Here's a great #YouTube video from #VladVexler with a Katz cameo explaining how it works at 5:54
I'm officially done with #Setarko on #YouTube. In his latest video, a Q&A, he's asked if he's worried about getting drafted to fight (and presumably die) in #Ukraine: "If #Russia starts conscripting PhD's to drive on the front line, then we've got big big problems."
So he thinks things are just peachy there now?
He also gives a (non) answer about why he never talks about #Putin in his videos. If you've watched @anderspuck or #VladVexler, his answer will disappoint but not surprise you.
