The EU is set to boost its defense capabilities to counter Russia amid a threatening global environment, according to a draft summit declaration seen by POLITICO.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the prospect of Donald Trump returning as US president next year in Washington — which could lead to less military support for Kyiv — has forced Brussels to rethink its approach to defense.

War has arrived in Crimea. Slowly but methodically, Ukraine is chipping away at Russia’s firepower in the peninsula.

Since the beginning of summer, Ukraine has massively stepped up strikes on the peninsula annexed by the Kremlin in a largely bloodless coup in 2014.

Using a mix of new home-made drones and foreign-supplied cruise missiles, it has hit military bases, air bases, and command-and-control centres.

The Netherlands is planning to deliver its first F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine at some point in 2024, the country’s defense minister, Kajsa Ollongren, said Tuesday.

Before the jets can be delivered, pilots, crew and technicians all have to be trained to fly and fight in the jets, Ollengren said. She did not give an exact answer on how long the training would last but estimated it would be between six and eight months.

New research has highlighted that Russians are increasingly feeling the pinch and seeing a more gloomy future amid the fallout from the Ukraine invasion.

The Open Minds Insitute (OMI), a research hub focused on disinformation and propaganda, found in a recent poll that around 80% of Russians were worried about their financial wellbeing.

But parts of the population apparently remain resolute.
