I understand why Ukraine is deploying this technology but I really hate that it exists in the first place https://euromaidanpress.com/2024/02/07/warfare-historys-first-ukrainian-combat-robot-adjusted-via-uav-engages-russian-positions/

War and technological advances have always gone together - from well before .

I’m not a fan of war, but it’s a harsh reality.

Other investments work well though, the space program for example generated tons of great things.

It will be very interesting to see where and take us.

PCs were the first stage, smart phones were the next. Affordable personal robots of some sort (full self driving cars?) will be common in 10 years or so.

Just a reminder that if you are into books, then give Oxfam a try...

https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk/reference-computing-internet/category/reference-computing-internet

I check that link once or twice a month and occasionally you find something interesting and often cheaper than eBay, but you do have to go though the list to find them.

e.g. Archimedes Assembly Language covering Risc OS https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk/archimedes-assembly-language/product/HD_301915275?sku=HD_301915275

Or the manual for the ZX81 https://onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk/1980-sinclair-zx81-basic-programming-software-catalogue/product/HD_301762149?sku=HD_301762149

Sometimes the prices can be a bit high, but often they aren't

To go along with my Amiga A500 and Atari 520 STfm, I also now have the ARM powered Acorn Archimedes A3010 originally released in 1992. Popular in my school for education and I did own one in 1994.

I decided to add a couple of upgrades to it, moving from 2MB to 4MB RAM and also add a "podule" to add a 1GB hard drive. How cute a name is that, a podule!

Already has a Gotek floppy disk emulator, so pretty much set for all the fun ahead now.

IDE drives showing up on the RISC OS 3 interface.

Who likes stuff? I managed to obtain this huge folder of services manuals for several different models. In the back it even has schematics for the A3000 which unfolds to what must be at least A1 size.

: Zarch/Virus (1987)

Seemingly co-authored by Elite creator David Braben and a sociopath, Zarch was primarily known to Brits via a Lander demo kids would sneak on to school computers. The full game expanded on its eye-popping 3D landscapes and absurdly twitchy gameplay, as you attempted to use the mouse to coax your craft to blow up enemies while not inconveniently crashing into a tree.

Isn't that a lovely A3020?

Apart from the yellowed keys, it's in perfect condition.

The small box in the middle holds all the computers around it. And many more, additional arcade machines aso.
A big thank you to all the core developers who give us this freedom with their mostly spare time work 😘

Although this pond has everywhere the same depth, it appears a lot deeper on the near side. Light rays are bent when they cross the water-air interface (Snell’s law), distorting the image. The more perpendicular you look (near side), the less it’s distorted. (A daily toot on physics in everyday life. That's the plan.) 1/n

One of my favourite demonstrations of ’ principle. Put a dropper in a closed bottle. By squeezing the bottle, pressure increases, compressing the air inside. The water level increases in the dropper and the dropper sinks as the buoyancy decreases. 5/n

Video of the experiment. When the bottle is squeezed, the water level in the dropper increases and the dropper sinks. Upon release of the pressure on the bottle, the dropper rises again to the surface.

Following my earlier toot, here's a clip of David Braben's Zarch running under emulation (an 8MHz ARM2 CPU is being emulated here, the sort in the base Acorn Archimedes A3000).

(The sound is a bit wonky on this emulator capture, note.)

And finally . I do OK on this. I wonder if this 3d-ish one is the one I played on the many years ago.

Here's my A3020. Currently has 2 MB RAM, a 250 MB HDD and a 386sx PC emulator card installed.

Sadly, I somehow blew up the mouse port some time ago, which now needs to be fixed. Also need to get the RAM upgraded to 4 MB.

derSammler,

Just ordered a keyboard connector fixing kit for it. While it is not broken (yet), it makes removing and re-connecting the keyboard easier with no risk of causing damage.

Oh, and battery and leaking caps were taken care of years ago already. 🙂

I don't know why but I almost always find the axial capacitors used in and have lost half their capacitance. The radials used are usually fine.
