ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES ARE OFTEN tasked with digitizing old books in their collections to preserve them and make them more accessible to the public. Most, even very large volumes, fit in scanners created just for books, but what happens when you need to scan one that’s nearly six feet tall? via @atlasobscura from the archives
As this annotated and corrected index of the atlas "Atlantis Maioris Appendix" (Johannes Janssonius, 1630) shows, almost all entries have errors: some maps are missing at all, almost all maps have wrongly page numbers, a few maps have different titles.
Such indexes were the result of the working practices of making an atlas in early modern Europe: An #atlas is a collection of #maps. So atlases varied significantly as publishers produced to be compiled maps. And here errors happened #histodons
