Bees (that are not our bees) took over the shed. My daughter (a beekeeper) had to remove them. As she was working, a small child passing on a trike looked terrified and shouted 'Bee Men!'.

Bee women too, my little Dude. Bee women too.

Meh, moldy frames in a beehive. I guess the online sources say it's no problem and the bees will clean it out, but I think we'll just compost these.

ai6yr, to raiders

Lost our first to . The beehive was loaded with honey, and another hive decided to take it for themselves; they overwhelmed the small set of guard bees, killed the queen, and stole all the honey. A bit of a mess to clean up today, this happened a week or so ago and the flies had gotten to the remaining brood, plus wax moths had just started laying. Lesson: 1. keep the entrance SMALL with a new hive 2. Don't have that much honey for a regenerating hive.

Introducing a new to a queenless split. This queen is a OHB from Mann Lake. Experiment to see how this breed does.

We inspected today. We have concluded we just don't know enough. The in the original hive were practically lethargic and haven't gotten anything done (i.e. no new frames drawn out) despite having been fed a couple of weeks ago. /1

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME YOU CAN WAX BICYCLE CHAINS WITH BEESWAX?!?!

(yes, yes... I'm a beekeeper).

@pszczelarstwo

Miód wylewa się z wirówki po otwarciu zaworu. Leci na sito, później na drugie w i końcu do wiadra.

I have bee-n busy, someone called about a swarm in their compost bin.

The Beekeeper (alas, with no action sequences, car chases, fistfights, or stunts, generally, LOL)

ai6yr, to random

LOL Apparently a new movie about a vengeful beekeeper who takes down a ring of cybercrooks. I'm laughing so much I am crying. The trailer includes the use of a jar of honey as a weapon against someone with a 50cal machine gun.

Jason Statham as: THE BEEKEEPER (wearing a bee suit)

Interesting, found we have gained 3 swarms of bees into empty hives today. 🐝

ai6yr, to random

Windy and cold, didn't think we'd be doing a swarm capture today, LOL.

Friday the 13th... FARM FIELD OF TERROR! They're angry! They want revenge! They are yelling "we're mad, we're going to get you!" (ps. 60,000 to 80,000 bees unhappy with being carted across the county, LOL They were not amused.)

Fer cryin' out loud. We moved a bee swarm to a ranch this morning and walked outside and a new swarm showed up just a few minutes ago.

ai6yr, to random

Amusing story. I am relocating a captured swarm from someone's backyard this week, and they asked if they could have honey from the swarm (and I had to explain that swarm won't have honey for another year or two... and that is if we are lucky/weather works out, etc.). Made me chuckle, lol.

Queue up the Guns N' Roses! (Haven't been back here since right before the rainy season).

My son made more soap. Apparently someone wants a regular supply of handmade beeswax soap for their airbnb.

FLIR + beehive. Big hive, looks like we probably have to split this hive, harvest honey, add supers.

New experiment. Attempt to use a coating on beehive stands to fend off .

ai6yr, to random

Yawn. Moving bees into ranches late at night last night.

ai6yr, to food

Hot honey from the other day. Honey heated and mixed with a bazillion hot peppers, then strained. There is typically a lot of hot peppers coated with honey left over... (currently out to the compost pile, but I wonder if folks would like very sticky, hot peppers in honey)

I think this is #7? I may have lost count. Quite the swarm season here 🐝🐝🐝

Inside the swarm trap, the cluster of bees is all on one side of the trap and hanging below the frames

Random observation. People with or are pro-beehive. People with pools and artificial lawns are anti-beehive.

ai6yr, to philosophy

As a beekeeper and someone who has spend a very long time in the technology and startup industry, I have great doubts on the economic feasibility of AI-powered beekeeping. (there's a startup with $53M in funding to use AI to "optimize pollination"). The entire US beekeeping industry had revenues of around $778M in 2022.

Beekeeping failure analysis notes: 20 lbs or so of honey applied to small plastic molded bottom against a wood floor results in cracking. Lost 2.5 gallons to the floor. 2 gallons recovered and will go to bee feeding.
