What do verification checkmarks mean on here & how do you get them?

cat_news,
@cat_news@mas.to avatar

@jglypt I honestly don't know. It might depend on which mastodon app you are using, but my guess is that its just there for decoration and doesnt mean anything haha. The one to check is the website one, like your one!

cat_news,
@cat_news@mas.to avatar

@jglypt by decoration I mean, it might literally be part of their profile picture

X will no longer allow users to hide their Premium blue check, even if they didn't want it in the first place.

The new policy comes after users with a high number of followers were automatically upgraded to Premium for free, says @theverge

"Once a status symbol, the blue check lost some of its luster after X shifted to a paid verification system under Elon Musk’s ownership."

Musk is taking fake advertiser money to place ads that use his own name and face to falsely endorse their product, and burdening the fact-checking community with annotating it.
I can't even.

Blue check Twitter (X) subscribers will be required to submit their photos and a photo of a government issued ID to an Israeli company with ties to Israeli Intelligence.

After this, every Twitter blue check mark should be seen as a little target symbol for any scammer who is looking for the world's most gullible person.

’s #X can’t send Blue subscribers their ad revenue-sharing payouts on time

Friday night is a good time to announce you’re not paying your bills.

"That’s not exactly what you’d want to hear from a program touting itself as “part of our effort to help people earn a living directly on X,” and the key to Elon Musk’s X dream for an app that handles , stock trading, and other vital financial features."

Twitter Blue subscribers can now hide their blue checks |

, which is currently rebranding to €X Blue, now includes the option to hide the notorious . Twitter Blue subscribers recently started noticing the “hide your blue checkmark” option on the web and in mobile apps, offering the ability to hide that they’re paying for and avoid memes about how “this mf paid for twitter.”

@mho It's quite something to pay $8/mo for the verificiation badge only to want to hide the verification.

I mean, I can talk at length at all the bad decisions since Musk's takeover, but that would take too much to go over and fully process it all. Plus, it would mean I actually put more thought into Musk's decisions than he has, and... nah

@mho, they should avoid writing long posts too, then. There are probably more signs that someone is a subscriber.

Alright, I don't really care for this dril guy, he'd do more good if he'd just bring his 1.8M followers over to the fediverse and start a "weird Mastodon" trend, or whatever, but him getting rid of the enforced blue check by simply changing his name (one of the conditions for not losing it) is just too funny.

And will hopefully finally put to rest any of the "is Musk secretly a genius" fan theories.

As a status symbol which earned them more views and clout, to us non-elite it always was a badge of shame. The elite are now stripped of their privilege and now want to pretend to sympathize with those they looked down on before.

Shame on and for doing this...shame on the former blue check mafia who only cared when their was lost

@edlouwe This summarizes one of reasons why I always despised corporate social media and wasn't able to engage in anything before Fediverse.
Offline world is enough unjust and inequal to make me sad and angry almost every day. Then I went to the internet... And saw and felt the same disgusting inequality even in completely virtual world created from thoughts and words. But that time I had at least a choice to not participate in that elite, big money and status-driven crap.
