Did you know the JSL sign for Dragon Ball is literally doing a kamehameha? Akira Toriyama created one of the most iconic attacks in all of anime and manga. It sucks to see him gone so soon...
I was a #DBZ kid. I'd draw characters from the show. Recently I started watching from the very beginning with the original #DragonBall series, falling in love with Toriyama's work all over again. So this news hit extra hard.
He was influential to #artists everywhere. DBZ was the first #anime I had ever watched. It just goes to show that you should just unabashedly be yourself. Draw your goofy characters. Name them after underwear and vegetables. And have fun.
I didn't grow up with Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z. I stopped having cable at home in the early 90s. So, my first real experience with Dragon Ball Z was in college. I had a roommate who would watch subtitled episodes late at night really loud, which annoyed me. I avoided the franchise for that reason for a long while.
In 2019, I picked up a copy of Dragon Ball FighterZ because of how highly it was rated. I fell in love with it immediately. Such an amazing fighting game. In December, Viz's Shonen Jump service dropped and allowed you access to their full archive of manga for certain series. Dragon Ball was among them. I decided to read the manga to get the backstory of these characters. I became enthralled and within three months had read all of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball Super.
Since then, I have plowed through so much manga from Akira Toriyama. From Cowa to Sandland to a ton of stuff in between. His influence on the anime and manga industry will be felt for generations to come.
Here's a picture of a few of the Bandai model kits I have of Goku and Vegeta in their Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan forms.
Rest in Peace, Toriyama. Thank you for all you have given us over the years. May your family and fans be comforted following your passing.
Queen Emeraldas isn't a huge Dragonball fan but even she can acknowledge how important Toriyama's work has been to the industry as a whole. :gothgirl_tears:
And that's all for your morning brain dump. We'll see you again at the midday hour. Emeraldas, logging out. 🔚
Pray for the family and fans of the works of Akira Toriyama. Pray for comfort for them following his passage. May his works continue to provide enjoyment to those who read or view them.
Acabei de saber que #AkiraToriyama faleceu. As suas personagens, especialmente Goku de #DragonBall, ensinaram-me várias coisa e deram-me muitos momentos que recordarei com carinho até chegar a minha vez. 😢
Man, this hits really hard.
Akira Toriyama had the biggest influence on my childhood. Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball are franchises that I share many memories of with my brother and many of my friends. Every day we would run home from school to catch the DBZ intro and watch Son Goku scream his heart out to reach his next form :cryingsunglasses:
