Hey all! Like so many others right now I am fleeing the large social media platforms and discovering the Fediverse for the first time! I’m either an an engineer or a software developer - depending on whose asking - in the Energy sector. I’m from Michigan originally but temporarily based in #taiwan for my wife’s job. I love road #cycling , #homebrewing , #cooking , various aspects of tech, and of course Sci-Fi.
I suppose that’ll be my first pass at an #introduction !
A sneaker taste (and demonstration of impatience).
I couldn't resist having an early taste of the Altbier I bottled a week ago. There's a little extra harsh bitterness with a very slight metallic-like taste at the end. I am hoping this mellows out after I give it a chance to age properly. Also, I'm hoping a little more toffee/caramel will come through with time.
I just learned that the dry yeasts that Fermentis sells in Europe are made in Mexico. Sorry, Fermentis, but this does not work for me. I do not have anything against Mexico specifically but I am going through great lengths to make beer from somewhat local ingredients and you folks ship your yeast around half the globe. I guess I have to find more local replacements for BE-134, BE-256 and T-58... 😐
Half the fun of brewing your own beer is coming up with the funny names for them after.
As an experiment, I'm making something inspired by Czech dark lagers with a wee bit more of a hop punch than I'd intended. I was driving home from synagogue (I had to go sign thank you notes for donations to the annual appeal) when the name hit me.
Has anyone here ever brewed with Crystal hops? If so, what do you think of them?
I’m looking for a US equivalent of the Hallertau Mittelfrueh for my Altbiers.
Stout is done now. I think it is my best stout yet. Very delicious. Lots of dark chocolate with a bit of vanilla going on. Excellent mouth feel. #homebrewing#beer#stout
Is Boston (MWRA-supplied) water more prone to algae blooms?
My humidifier turned bright green this morning. I’m cleaning it with citric acid solution per manufacturer instructions, but if I need to peroxide or C-brute the thing I will.
My knowledge of water quality only goes as far as “#NewHampshire water has brain amoebas, pack in your own,” so I thought I’d ask.
New coffee brewing implements are here! Excited to use the EDT to see if it really makes a difference in the quality of an espresso shot. Meanwhile, both stoked and scared to try the bottomless portafilter because I'm pretty sure it'll be messy the first few (?) times before hubby and I get the hang of it.
I could not wait any longer and cracked open a bottle of the Motueka Single Hop IPA. This is a pretty damn tasty beer. Apricot and peaches with a nice late hitting bitterness. This beer should get even better with a couple more weeks of bottle conditioning. Cent'anni y'all! #homebrewing#homebrew#beer
To the homebrewing bubble: Anyone present who brewed with Lallemand NovaLager? Did you brew with it between 15 and 20°C? What results did you get?
I am considering to re-work my failed attempt at Altbier brewing into a proper Kellerbier using NovaLager but when I look at Lallemand's Lager Yeast Selection brochure it looks like in that temperature range I might as well just make a pseudo-Lager with Nottingham yeast.
