If you have pets, you likely call them things which have nothing to do with their actual names. Biscuit’s nicknames: Mr. Baby, Babby, Babs, Willa Willa, Little Love.
Putuuqti’s nicknames: Other Baby, PP, Babby, Willa Willa, Little Love
"What does it feel like to speak your primary language in an accent from your secondary one? I would later find out."
In today's new Longreads essay, Montserrat Andrée Carty writes about growing up with different languages and cultures—and embracing different versions of herself.
Irish names you’re probably saying wrong and how to pronounce them
'Do you know your Gearóid from your Gobnait? Your Fearghal from your Muirgheal? To the untrained eye, Irish names can seem like a daunting ambush of rogue consonants and surprise vowels.'
Yves is the stage name of kpop idol and sometime Loona member Ha Sooyoung.
In the past people have been critical of the stage name on the grounds of Yves being a given name for males in French.
That criticism strikes me as misguided. In the first place, the challenge to rigid gender markings and the homophony with the English "Eve" belong to the lore of Loona.
In addition, I can't be the only person who is delighted to come across beautiful women with names like James, Charles, Michael, Yves....

jinxie:
“jinxie” was the name of a friend’s cat. reminds me too of a trickster or prankster, whom the joke is on, as well. an embrace of whoops & whoa & a sparkle in the eye shared by all involved. being charmed, under a spell. jinxed. also the “jinx” of a mirrored response. a dyadic utterance, unplanned. hijinx. happenstance. call me jinxie.

antlers:
“little antlers” is (one of) my burner name(s). at burning man, folks slap a name on you. it may be cool, it may not. you don’t (usually) get to choose. they only stick around if they fit — and when they fit, they stick around. my playa bike had some manzanita branches zip-tied onto the handlebars, and these branches looked like little antlers. why this name stuck around with me? you’d be a better judge of that, i imagine. call me antlers.
Over the course of 2023, Mastodon and the Fediverse became a serious part of my online life. I've had more fruitful discussions and enjoyable conversations than probably ever before on the internet.
Therefore I have decided to use my real name for 2024 onwards. I'm a real person, many others are doing it, so why shouldn't I? I've used my real name on Twitter, so I think it's only fair to do it here. I also believe that it helps the Fediverse to be taken more seriously. There are real people here!
Traditional ant names are based on one ant virtue as the first name and one ant “intimidating quality” as the last name.
For example:
Temperance the Absconder
Circumspecicity the Dessicator
Proportionality the Relentless
Vigilance the Unsuspected
Synchronicity the Amputator
Alacrity the Calculating
Altruisticity the Dismemberer
Prudence the Devastator
Efficiency the Eternal Witness
Every ant you see has a name like this. #ants#names
"In recent decades, candidates for political office in San Francisco have developed a tradition of finding an “authentic” Chinese name to put on ballots. In the past, the process was somewhat freewheeling, in which non-Chinese candidates were more or less allowed to call themselves whatever they wanted. But the rules are tightening."
Some time ago I read some of Joe Hill's horror #books. In one novel there was a trope of using "real" #names during summoning souls of deceased ones. Firstly main characters thought it should be names they were given at birth, but it didn't work. It worked when they used their chosen nicknames. And one of them said their legal names were bad past they escaped and chosen names represented they current selves and life they chose for themselves.
I like it very much and I feel this clearly.
And I liked when someone here mentioned "legal names" instead of "real names" while discussing some mainstream social media stupid policies. For me legal name is only dumb label, some identifier in offices to handle formal aspects of life. If I am not attached emotionally to my documents' numbers or debit card's number, why I should be attached to stupid word someone else chosen to call me and added to database?
I need some Polish phrase for "legal name" which would carry the same meaning.
