I’m taking a buttload of seedling pots, flowerpots, and seedling trays to an independent nursery today. So much better to reuse than to throw into a landfill, especially since that stuff does not get recycled. Recycling of plastics is such a crock of shit. Nice to tidy up the gardening shed, too. It’s such a mess.

The guy at the baby plant place was very happy to get so many pots and trays from us. If you buy seedlings, save the pots and tetra-packs for independent plant nurseries. Help keep the plastic from the landfills.

All those reading and contributing to ClimateDiary will know that questions of are central to what we are collectively trying to work through here.

This essay by Jag Bhalla, on "The Dark Origins of Optimism and its Current Cheerful Evils", is one of the best pieces I've ever read on this. Maybe the best (also many links). Enjoy.

"As Voltaire knew, optimism is often an elite-serving demon in disguise"

@pvonhellermannn I’m enjoying the article, but wow, does this author ever have a thing for alliteration!

I went to the gym today where I did Nordic curls, goblet squats, kettlebell stuff, and running.

I’m always worried about the running. I used to race regularly, mostly cross country, but also mountain races and obstacle course races. Since hormonal changes knocked me for a loop, running has been extra hard. I have hypermobility, which means that I have to rely on a lot of muscular endurance because my toes and Achilles tendons are loose and floppy. Until I have all those muscles built up, running often results in pain in my toes and along the top of my foot.

I’d really like to be able to run regularly again. I miss being able to do 10km mountain courses. I really really REALLY hope the air quality, temperature, and my health conspire to let me do this again. If I can run again, it’s better for us all. It means the country isn’t on fire again.

In other news, ever since doing chin-ups on Monday, I’ve been unable to straighten my arms. The DOMS are real. Looking forward to being able to do unassisted pull-ups and chin-ups again, too.

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@RickiTarr I’m in Canada and grew up with no fixed address in a travel trailer for a bunch of my childhood. I lived in numerous campgrounds alongside people living year round in tents lined in cardboard and blankets.

One thing I observed today that I HOPE I can get on video somehow ... Camponotus pennslyvanicus can jump one of the wild ants I was looking at did a leap from my hand to to nearby pole.

It was not just a fall, she launched herself like a grasshopper!

I wonder if jumping is more common in ants than we think...

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@futurebird @alexwild I don’t know much about ants, but a couple of years ago, I was sitting by a pool when an ant carried a dead ant over to the water. It then proceeded to toss the dead ant in and scurry away. Did the ant murder and dispose of the body? Was it simply a burial at sea? Hmm!

Alice Munro has died. Her writing has always inspired me because it felt like she was describing so much about my own upbringing. She was an incredible short story writer, and if I can write even half as well as her, I will have succeeded as a writer. https://www.theguardian.com/books/article/2024/may/14/alice-munro-nobel-winner-and-titan-of-the-short-story-dies-aged-92 #AliceMunro #CanLit #ShortStories #WritingCommunity

I was very briefly in a discord group for writers that I’d been invited to join. Someone posted something which included the word “bullshit,” and the discord host said there was no room for such language as it was a “family-friendly” forum, something that was definitely not mentioned before I joined up. I quickly left the server, as I use words much more salty than that, and do not write “family-friendly” fiction.

I got myself a pair of lobster flipflops to wear in the garden. Couldn’t resist. First flipflops I’ve purchased since the 1980s, I think. OMG. Shoes.

Age is just a number. It’s the number of meds you have to take to keep your body running.

While training at the gym, I accidentally looked at the sun reflecting off a windshield and that triggered my scintillating scotoma. I spent the final third of my gym time minus about a third of my vision. A bright circle of electric blue-white light, like sparks from an arc welder, strobed across my field of vision. I was afraid I wouldn’t be ok to ride my bike home, but thankfully it went away after about fifteen minutes. I guess I’m going to have to wear my sunglasses at the gym.

Whenever this strikes, I’m always scared it will not go away. At its worst, I’ve had it 24/7 for four months across about 75% of my vision. Because it’s such an unusual disorder, most folks have no idea how incapacitating it is. I usually get a sort of hangover afterwards which leaves me with increased brain fog.

I suspect it might have been caused by the Irvings spraying DDT over my home a bunch of times when I was a little kid.

@anthropy I was on a whole variety of anti seizure and beta blocker meds for this back when the issue was chronic. The side effects were much worse than the issue.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@anthropy I still have a low level of this at all times, but my brain has learned to push the flickers to a tiny part of my vision where I am able to ignore it.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

The hangover is in effect. Once again, I’m spending the day in bed. Hoping I’ll be able to function this evening, but feeling like crud right now.

I’m on a bunch of mailing lists for literary magazines, and a while back, one sent advice for writers which pissed me off. This was directed toward BIPOC writers, and it said that writers should seek to emulate writers like Faulkner and Hemingway with their simple, straightforward language, and not to try writing like Toni Morrison with her rich, poetic style.

Write however you want, folks, but seriously, why would a magazine specifically centred on BIPOC authors elevate a couple of dead white dudes while throwing the Black woman under the bus like that? Grr.

And FWIW, I don’t try to write like anyone but myself.

Today is Red Dress Day, in honour of missing and murdered Indigenous people. In Canada, Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people are six times more likely to be murdered than their non-Indigenous counterparts.

“However, nearly four years after the release of the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and two years following the release of the National Action Plan, only two of the 231 Calls for Justice have been implemented, while an implementation timeline has yet to be released.”

Yesterday I got to hang out with farm animals. It was nice to be around chickens, horses, goats, sheep, turkeys, and rabbits. I miss living with so many critters. Pretty sure I still remember how to milk goats after decades of not doing it. One of the goats took a particular liking to @Knightky who gave her all the scritches.

Shanmonster,
@Shanmonster@c.im avatar

@Knightky I also hung out with birds of prey. A few bald eagles were extra chatty and made piping cries at me. They sound much more like seagulls than they do red-tailed hawks. Not sure why so many movies voice-over eagles with red-tailed hawks. I also danced with an owl, and another owl made cute little peeping sounds at me. My favourite, the turkey vulture, wasn’t at all interested in me this time.
