Noticed a really clever, interesting and sneaky thing JLCPCB does! I usually don't want through hole components like pin headers populating and therefore don't add the LCSC numbers in the BOM. Cleverly today JLCPCBA identified them (a 2, a 7 and an 8 pin header) and populated them automatically with extended parts. You can just turn them off in the preview list but its clever and sneaky. Why can't it identify ALL my parts?!?! :)

Easing myself back into doing PCBs... Here's a small update to an almost-finished design that brings this up to version 1.0, and once manufactured and tested, I will be able to close this board off as complete.

I've just been updating my PCB page on my blog: https://diyelectromusic.wordpress.com/pcbs/

It lists all my MIDI and audio related PCBs so far that I've made for Raspberry Pi (V3/V4, V1, Zero, 400); Raspberry Pi Pico; Arduino Uno; Arduino Nano; Seeed XIAO; and a few other odds and ends.

It also provides the context for the use of the designs and links to all the relevant design and build notes.

Scientists described the findings as a “huge wake-up call”.

Bitcoin is dirty, dirty, dirty.

“The worldwide BTC mining network consumed 173.42 TWh of electricity during the 2020–2021 period, bigger than the electricity consumption of most nations. The mining process emitted over 85.89 Mt of CO2eq in the same timeframe, equivalent to the emission caused by burning [42 million tons] of coal or running 190 natural gas‐fired power plants.”

Okay, I have the stupidest problem.

I can't find a SMD USB port (micro-B or USB C), that's available for assembly on that I can find a footprint for.

The part numbers aren't on Component Search Engine, I can't figure out how to download the footprints from JLCPCB, and if they're clones of better known parts I have no idea how to match them.

Every other component is easy. USB ports are somehow the only thing I can't figure out.

Help?

Day 275 of

My brain: "You have so many in-progress projects you should work on finishing."

My brain: "..."

My brain: "Time to start another new project".

This will be a three-rail voltage and current monitor for systems. It has two displays so you will be able to see everything at once, and can have graphs and other fun visualizations.

And I'll be able to use it as base to connect to other modules via UART when I need an extended UI.

Here's the backing board that sits behind the LCD modules. Having this board allows me to only use four screws to hold the LCDs in place, instead of eight.

This is the main processor board for the power meter. It drives the two LCDs, manages the encoder input, and connects to the power board (yet to be laid out) via I2C.

I was too unathletic to follow them into the bush, but I spent my summers doing my bit, ringing doorbells for to get my neighbours fired up about the Canadian pulp-and-paper industry, which wasn't merely clear-cutting our old-growth forests - it was also poisoning the system with , threatening us all.

Day 257 of - Assembly and Testing edition!

My older USB-C power supply module didn't put out enough current to power some of the larger boards that I've been making, so it was time to move to a different DC-DC converter.

Assembled the board up, and everything is working!

Day 255 of (Part 2) - Assembly and Testing edition!

I received the boards, but only the first few boxes light up. There seems to be a problem between D59 and D60. The soldering job doesn't look too happy...

I tried reflowing it, with no change. Next step is to take off the parts completely, and swap them out for different ones.

This is not the behaviour I was expecting from a PTC fuse trip. I expected the trickle current to be way lower than the hold current, not equal to the hold current.

Below: A chart showing prolonged overcurrent of 1A through a 500 mA PTC fuse, with the resistance increasing until the current stabilizes at 500 mA, where it remains constant.
