Forests have a critical role to play in capturing and storing carbon from the Earth’s atmosphere – but some models exaggerate their carbon removal potential by almost three-fold, according to a leading professor of forest economics. (not)

"There's a huge difference between simply planting a and making sure that trees survive and grow over the long-term.

[It requires] the necessary ecological understanding, long-term planning and follow-up.

By deepening their focus on improving practices, organizations and their supporters will have the best possible chance of achieving positive impact and avoiding unintended consequences."

Scenes from tree planting on the mountain in 2023. A steep slope and a riparian area will now be full of native plants. These hillsides had been threatened by takeover from invasive weeds & invasive trees. Species planted include oak, hickory, willow, sycamore, dogwood, redbud, spicebush, hornbeam, buttonbush, black gum, paw paw, persimmon, river birch, ninebark, and serviceberry.

Happy New Year!

Seen from a distance, a view of tree tubes spilling down a slope into a ravine around a stream. It's hard to see the stream from here, it's a dark line, which is also defined by an old cattle fence that kept the cows out of the stream.

We don't often see this stated so bluntly: most "tree planting" campaigns do more damage than good.

(not mentioned: how many are outright scams)

As I approach my 25th anniversary at work (on November 30) I'm reminded how stupid our service recognition program has gotten.

At one time, you'd get $750 extra pay, plus a pin, plus a plaque and a party.

Then, for a while, you'd get a $750 gift card (which was annoying but you could put toward your personal account), plus the pin and plaque.

Now you get $750 in shares (you have to pay $25 to withdraw them) an e-badge and they plant one single tree on your behalf. Whoopee.

I used to plant trees. They're dirt cheap. Most don't survive.

Planting one tree every 5 years to "celebrate" an employee's tenure is so ridiculously meaningless that it's insulting.

Oh! And they also have a website I can go to where they'll generate a PDF certificate I can choose to print out myself.

As a teenager growing up in , I always envied the kids who spent their summers ; they'd come back from the bush in September, insect-chewed and leathery, with new muscle, incredible stories, thousands of dollars, and a glow imparted by the knowledge that they'd made a new forest with their own blistered hands.

There's active work being done in Newman Park in 👍
I saw new big leaf maple & garry oak planted in the old pasture fields by the parking lot.

Is everyone on the same page that old-growth forests sequester much more carbon than younger forests?

So it makes more sense to focus on not cutting down trees rather than planting new trees since it takes two to three decades for trees to reach full maturity, if they survive.

sheislaurence,

@davidho we wouldn’t need if we didn’t cut down in the first place: forests & ancient naturally regenerate, thank you very much. As for the weakling shit dried-up branches projects brandish as actual , surprise surprise, HALF die within 5 years and those that survive are earmarked for . There is actually NO measured goal of tree survival or number of mature trees in those projects. https://ig.ft.com/one-trillion-trees/

The biggest funders & marketers of as a goal are actually & corporations. They know telling ppl they'll plant a ton of trees or lying about cleanups helps their laundry.

You're dumb ASF to believe it. You can plant 50 million trees - most won't survive. Ancient have essential to planetary survival for all living beings. Abandoned wells poison, still.
