Slow radio @ BBC Radio Nottingham today. My colleague Prof Sara Goodacre is introduced as "Spiderwoman". Me? I'm "Snailman" - just does not have the same glamour, does it? 🕷️🐌 #scicomm#snails#spider
I played with my snails for a few minutes this morning, for the first time in a while really cause I’ve been away sick :( so have some long overdue #snailposting. Niles has been super into his jade plant so I let him be, but Trixie and Chibi were playing piggyback in the palm of my hand.
This book was meant for me, haha. I LOVE snails. They are so fascinating and adorable.
This book is a wonderful blend of snail observations and a memoir of the author's time stuck in bed with a mysterious illness. Mostly, it's the snail observations for me. I learned SO MUCH! And I love them even more because of it.
It's small and short, and a great reminder of the importance of connecting with nature- even the tiniest life.
Loving this one - lucky enough to work on these snails myself, a flat-spired sinistral "species" only found on one mountain wall, at least in my experience. Jury still out on whether they are a good species or not though, certainly gene-flow with other species. Post by Shun Ito, ex-Chiba lab. We've been putting food out every night for hedgehogs, only to find it gets invaded by slugs.
So, following the advice of the good people of Gardener's Question time (BBC R4) I applied copper tape around the foos bowl and placed it on copper sheets.
At best I'd say they find it slightly irritating.
UPDATE:
Seems to be working.
A few of the big slugs have made it across the copper sheet and scaled the copper tape around the bowl then turned back
For #MosaicMonday a detail of a mosaic in the basilica of #Aquileia depicting #snails in a basket.
The meaning of the motif is unclear. It was suggested that it is a symbol of resurrection, as snails are hibernating animals. But it was also argued that the motif is a symbolic representation of the dishes most favoured by the upper class during holy feasts.
We don't really have a #garden worth mentioning, but we have a little nook where some random stuff grows. I went to get some tomatoes earlier today and saw a bunch of #snails hanging out on the Jerusalem artichokes. Happy to see that. 🙂 @gardening

Snailing in Prince Edward county, Ontario. Beautiful field site, both species present, and possible hybrids? Also present is 12045 banding phenotype, rare in Europe. #snails#ontario#Cepaea
