What’s a book you’d like to read next year, either a newly published book in 2024 or a book that you didn’t get to this year?

I’ll start:

The Year of the Locust by Terry Hayes (2024 pub. date) & A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (not new 😉).

@Likewise @bookstodon I really want (hope) to dive into the "The Book of the New Sun" series by Gene Wolfe. I read the first book a while ago but want to start it over now that I have all the books.

Did it seem like the Black Friday Deals the last few years weren't actually deals?

During the years of Covid-19 lockdowns, many retail based companies saw unprecedented growth, because people were staying home and buying stuff instead traveling, going out to eat, and the other social activities they would normally do. That combined with Stimulus Checks created a sort of false economy.

Now any logical person, would understand why, and set their expectations appropriately, but not our Corporate Overlords, their religion is perpetual growth, even though nothing has worked that way ever. So if they saw an unprecedented 9% growth for two years, they were absolutely shocked when the only saw 6% growth. Now 6% growth is still incredibly good, nothing to be upset about at all, but they have a board that they promised impossible statistics to, and guess who gets punished?! If you said the Consumer, you were unfortunately right, no actual deals for you. It blows my mind that people still think rich and powerful people are smart, greed makes you stupid, they just live in a system that empowers their stupidity.

braveamateur,
@braveamateur@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr I try to avoid deals/sales. The other day someone wrote something like "if I need a thing and I can buy it or I can buy it and get a coupon of x% on next purchase, I'm gonna buy it with the coupon". I'd rather avoid the coupon, that's how they get you to buy stuff you don't need.

Sometimes at the grocery store I see a yogurt or something that's like 30% off because it's close to the expiration date. Those deals I can take bc I can see the reason for the deal. It's not made up. 😅

So, the hubs and I have a one of the long term couple debates about when is the best time to shower.

For me, a shower is calming and relaxing, so I tend to do it in the evening or before bed.

He says it's refreshing and energizing, so it helps him wake up, and get going in the morning.

How about y'all, is it relaxing, refreshing, something in between, or something different entirely? When do you normally do it? Have you always done it the same or have you changed over the years?

braveamateur,
@braveamateur@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr Evening for me, but it's because I just have to be out of the door as soon as possible in the morning. Brush teeth, clothes on, and I'm out. I don't even eat breakfast on workdays. 😅

This is fucking unhinged.

Corporations and politicians are ruining the planet, not people who take photos of their cats.

This is the same kind of blame shifting corporations use to distract from their own culpability. Look up the history of the litterbug campaign. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2006/05/origins-anti-litter-campaigns/

Scolding people for using digital tools isn't gonna save the planet. Electing better politicians that create laws to rein in corporations might.

braveamateur,
@braveamateur@mas.to avatar

@fraying This reminds me of this article I read a while ago about people's usage of tech and social media:

"You could say that it's my responsibility to exert self-control when it comes to digital usage, but that's not acknowledging that there's a thousand people on the other side of the screen whose job is to break down whatever responsibility I can maintain"

The metre is defined as the distance light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second in 1983.

After the 2019 redefinition of the SI base units, this definition was rephrased to include the definition of a second in terms of the caesium frequency Δν_Cs. This series of amendments did not alter the size of the metre significantly, a change of 0.02% from the original value of exactly 40000 km, which also includes improvements in the accuracy of measuring the circumference.

@gutenberg_org I was just wondering if imperial units had an as precise definition. Turns out they're based on the metric system. 🤪

I don't give a flying fuck what the Forefathers wanted. Why would we let a bunch of dead sexist slave owners decide the kind of country we want to live in?

braveamateur,

@RickiTarr Why should today's society be dictated by the will of people who lived hundreds of years ago and not by the will of people who will live hundreds of years hence? That's seems so arbitrary.

"Plants ignore the most energy-rich part of sunlight because stability matters more than efficiency, according to a new model of photosynthesis.

They also offer a lesson that — at least sometimes — evolution cares less about making biological systems efficient than about keeping them stable.

It appears that the photosynthesis machinery evolved not for maximum efficiency but rather for an optimally smooth and reliable output."
