A journey through busted tapes, the Internet Old Farts Club, and SPARCstations.
It's amazing, and a little sad, to think that something created in 1989 that changed how people used and viewed the then-nascent Internet had nearly vanished by 2024.
If your wine is made by the founder of Cypress Semiconductors, does that make it a #SPARC-ling wine? (Cypress built the first full-custom SPARC processor). #SunMicrosystems#ClosDeLaTech#TJRodgers
I may just admit to myself that I'm unlikely to really use some of the old #Sun#SPARC#Solaris kit like this Ultra-10 again. A lot of them have had the onboard (not trivial replaceable) battery due so they've lost the memory of what their MAC addresses were ...
Oh wow I'm loving these themed tags - for #ScreenshotSaturday this is my Sun Blade 150 workstation running Solaris 10u8 showing off the #sgug homepage! It's a very reliable if boring machine due to its use of commodity parts and architectural decisions like using an IDE bus over a SCSI bus
The synchronous serial interface of my VAX failed and needed repair - Not a fun task given the amateurish setup in my basement. After extracting the machine and fixing a couple of cracked solder joints on the DSW42-AA, it is now back on TELEBAHN. After re-assembly, the setup looks neater than before, but I still dread the next time something fails. #retrocomputing#x25#vax#sparc
These old digital cameras actually used a SPARClite CPU from Fujitsu. It seemed like they were really trying to make SPARC the instruction set for embedded multimedia devices (RISC is the future!), a role ARM ended up taking in our timeline.
Got a Sun Netra X1 for just 50€ from a private seller in Rome. He offered to deliver it to me personally.
The server came with Solaris 8 preinstalled, but I wanted to have a modern system on it. In lack of an optical drive, I set up a serial console to the Sun LOM, and took up the challenge of installing NetBSD over network, via DHCP/RARP and NFS [1]. (See screenshot).
