If they don’t pay those prices, how will they pay Joe Rogan 250$ million to spread Covid disinformation ?

After 4 years being wireless, I'm going wired again. I dusted off my old AKG K550 headphones and bought a new . The FC4 sounds great with MQA from . It also works fine with Linux.

sesivany,
@sesivany@floss.social avatar

@bastilian I've had a Sony WH-1000 XM4 that can go up to 96 kHz using LDAC, but when I compare them side by side, HiBy+AKG is a superior experience, noticeably.

The Sony headphones also have their charms. They support 360 Reality Audio which is an interesting experience. There are not many recordings in this format though.

sesivany,
@sesivany@floss.social avatar

An interesting finding is that #PipeWire resamples everything to 48 kHz by default. If you want higher sample rates, you have to tweak the config.

Just started free* trials of Qobuz and Tidal. They both offer up to 24-bit, 192 kHz streaming. Even so, I think I prefer Qobuz's quality.

The drawback is that Qobuz does NOT HAVE LYRICS. This is a major drawback for me as a hearing impaired person and also a songwriter (I want to know for sure what the lyrics are)! Qobuz is slightly cheaper if you pay annually rather than monthly.

*free but you give them payment info and the subscription kicks in if you don't cancel

Re: which service pays the artists the most per stream

I looked through my streaming sales and from what I can tell the rate varies, probably based on what tier of subscription the listener has.

I only have a few streams from any Qobuz listener but the highest rate I saw was US $0.0105.

For Tidal, the highest rate was $0.011.

But again, it's hard to say if whoever was listening to my music was using the most premium subscription option.

FYI free streams usually don't pay the artist at all!

Srovnání: Tidal vs Spotify

Po devíti letech používání Spotify jsem se rozhodl pro změnu. Tou změnou je Tidal. Jaký je v porovnání se streamovací klasikou?

I honestly think has missed the boat on this one. Those who care about will already be on or ; and those who don't care won't pay the extra to get it. The fact the aforementioned three services all include lossless in their base subscriptions while it will be an extra tier on Spotify won't help matters.

If they'd gone lossless a year ago it might have mattered. Now, not so much

I'm wanting to leave Spotify (there are so many reasons for doing so) and I've read that Tidal is the streaming service distributing the biggest share to artists (probably after Bandcamp, but that's a different kind of service).

Has anybody experienced Tidal and seen drawbacks? Or do they somewhat have weaker values than Spotify's CEO and I didn't catch that information?

Thanks in advance for any comments!

@yrochat tried Tidal but couldn't find most of the stuff I listen to so it's back to mp3s for me

I read a thread on here which said pays artists (presumably they mean labels) the best, so I downloaded the app to see what it's all about in 2024 because I know it's going to be very different to the Napster I remeber of 2000. :crystal_ball_fb:

And it seems on the surface like a competent streaming app. :face_smile_fb: There's not that much difference between / / / etc. these days to be honest.

But I think I'm sticking with . :face_sunglasses_fb:

:face_smiling_open_fb: Reasons to use over another service:

  1. Their logo is better.

  2. They pay labels more than other platforms (apparently)

:face_neutral_fb: Reasons to not use over another service:

  1. Switching is a nightmare, unless you want to start a fresh account with an empty library

  2. The UX "feels" a little odd. I can't quite put my finger on why.

  3. Not as compatible with Last.fm / ListenBrainz

  4. Does it work on my Sonos / many Apple devices? Idk.

I've been with for 10 years, but I'm now considering switching to . I don't like the way Spotify is going: shifting focus to podcasts, paying shit to musicians... I'd rather see my money go to them than to Rogan.
But it's not just about me, I have my whole family on our family plan. I have to be sure about it and convince them. If you have made the switch, what had been your experience?

sesivany,
@sesivany@floss.social avatar

Ultimately, the biggest barrier to leaving will be Spotify Connect. Some devices in the family will have to be left behind. Other than that I think is able to completely replace Spotify.

@stoamandl No, I also use Android. I've got a month to evaluate it, so let's see how it will work for me.

Where do y'all buy , specifically CDs and 16bit flac? Currently I'm using:
a) for streaming,
b) for rare NM+ CDs,
c) amazon?? for mainstream CDs,
d) https://us.7digital.com/ ?? for -- purchased downloads.
e) Does anyone use other streaming services, like iDJPool?
f) (I already know how to pirate and how to buy mp3s.)

I'm especially looking for (d) -- alternative sources of FLAC purchases -- because 7digital won't have everything (nothing does).

JillsJoy,
@JillsJoy@NerdJoy.social avatar

@fajjie
Depends on the genre.

I have found Barnes & Noble for some physical CD purchases (when I try to avoid Amazon). I try to order directly from the artist if possible, like their website or in person at a show.

For Kpop and KHipHop, I try kpopusaonline.com or subkshop.com, which are US domestic shipping, but if not available there, then ktown4u.com with spendy shipping from Korea.

I am going to cheat and give you one link that has the intros/choruses of a bunch of songs. 😁

EXO is my favorite kpop group. They've been around for 12 years and even did the closing ceremony of the Olympics in Korea a few years back.

Last year, they released a new album and, as part of the promotion tour, appeared on "Killing Voice" where they sing key parts of all their hits, plus their latest single. It gives a good mix of different styles in 20 minutes.

Got an answer and it turns out that they're slowly open-sourcing their codebase and I can start a discussion in their repository:
