Last year, we learned our porcupines do not like getting their paws wet. So my wife built them a little stone bridge to cross the 1 inch deep trench 🥹 They seem to have mastered it! Anything to not get wet. Even if they’re already soaked from the pouring rain…

17 second, black and white trailcam footage of a beefy porcupine lumbering down an old path to an 8 inch wide trench that carries water from the forest to the brook. It approaches cautiously, check the stones that have been placed as a bridge, and slowly walks across. The video is taken in the middle of the night and it is raining.

Science type field researchers, I’m after a good quality wildlife/trail camera with excellent night video/photo abilities and reasonable battery life. Ideally suited to Australian conditions.

It will be situated in a high rainfall area, with ambient temperature ranges of 5ºC to 45ºC depending on time of year.

My current cheapy ali-express one often decides it isn’t going to record anything.

Given how crap web searching is these days, I figured I’d get better recommendations from people who actually use these things professionally.

I love the hops

A squirrel hops towards the camera along the top of a porch railing. Hop hop hop. Then they hop out of view past the camera. There's snow on the ground and no leaves on the trees.

Two rabbits in front of my trail camera a few nights ago.

A pair of rabbits walk down a forest trail at night. The one in front is slightly larger than the one in back. Their eyes glow under the light of the infrared camera which renders the video in black and white.

Looks like the 25th was a popular day for taking a bath!

Right up close to the camera we have a metal bird bath filled with water. A bluejay is standing in the water, which goes up to their underside. They lean down and shake in the water, giving themselves a bath. There's patio furniture and the neighbor's house visible in the background.

We have a small stream of water that runs through our property on its way to the brook. It’s a great spot for a . This past summer I began to see footage of this one that REALLY didn’t like having to cross this tiny width of water.

This is a 20 second video of a large porcupine ambling its way down a forested trail until it stops at a small stream of water. It’s about 10 inches across but the porcupine is NOT going to just walk in. Instead it looks at several crossing spots before determining one is ok. But still it slowly lowers one front paw in and pulls it back. Then another. You can almost see the sheer repulsion on its face. Finally it is able to cross without getting wet. The video is black and white and recorded during the night.

Video described by my friend: Oh look, another Ohio backyard scene. Front and center, prominent, we have a bird bath that looks like a pond! It's like a soft yellow in there, perhaps it's a leaf that's fallen off the tree. At the very left of the screen, on the edge of the bird bath is a mourning dove: smooth boy, smooth boy morning dove. He is silky. We have, if you look really closely, there's a–there's a fence in the background, three tiers high, that goes against the woods. There's a brown maple tree–like those brown purpley ones that happen in Ohio: big, massive. To the right of that tree, there's a little tiny cardinal and it's just doing its thing, and it flies away. And I'm telling you, there's this big-ass fucking blue jay that comes flying in with all of its fucking feathers and lands on the, um, the thingy–the pond–the bird bath! It lands on the bird bath pond with the mourning dove. He's a thirsty boy. He comes in, he looks around, he takes a sip, he looks at you like he's the king of the fucking bird jungle. Then he flies off. Oh my god, I didn't even talk about the bird feeders! You know, they're just an accessory today. Anyway, listen, that bird bath looks so fucking lovely. I like the little colors in there.

Wait for it...

A night vision view of a natural path in the forest. Very small bugs can be seen floating in the air, thanks to the infrared light from the camera. For quite some time, nothing happens. Then more nothing. Then a pair of eyes appears in the distance, and as they quickly approach they turn into a fox, which goes zooming by. Then another pair of eyes appears and does the same thing.

Little Bunny Fu Fu...

A wild rabbit hops towards the night vision camera. Its eyes shine brightly as they reflect the infrared light put out by the camera. The rabbit turns, gives us a great close up profile view, looks around a bit, then hops away, never to be seen again.

After we installed our new pond/water feature in the backyard (basically in the forest), something has been jostling the rocks around.

Put my out there for a week, and hit paydirt today.

It’s a big freakin’ . We’ve heard plenty of owls here, but never saw one, until now.
