It's been a dramatic few days for commercial aviation with passengers on three airlines suffering terrifying ordeals involving severe inflight turbulence. Nadine Itani, Programme Leader and Lecturer in Air Transport Management at the University of Surrey tells FRANCE24's Tom Burges Watson that for every 1% increase in average temperature there's an estimated 10% increase in the frequency of clear-air turbulence. #Travel#Aviation#Turbulence https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tzKHTXcW4A
✈️Turbulence is up ~15%, air travel is more dangerous bc of #climatechange. Are pilots being trained to avoid sudden turbulence? Should some flights be delayed or cancelled for air safety?
TSP Sec Buttigieg: "An increase in flight turbulence is one of the effects of CC that are already upon us in terms of our transp. -the deadly turbulence on a recent Singapore Air flight is "very rare," but... can happen & sometimes it can happen unexpectedly."
Another day, another✈️turbulence incident, likely caused by #climatechange:
Turbulence hits Qatar Airways flight to Dublin, injuring 12 people. The flight hit by turbulence while en route from Doha to Dublin on Sun, officials said.
The flight QR107, which landed in Dublin just before 1 p.m. local time, experienced turbulence while airborne over Turkey, Dublin Airport officials said in a statement. The aircraft was met by emergency personnel.
"#ClimateChange could make severe #turbulence a bigger problem in the future. Last year, a study published in Geophysical Research Letters found that turbulence in some parts of the world may already be on the rise."
Another one:
"A #QatarAirways flight struck severe #turbulence over Turkey, injuring 12 people on board, before landing as scheduled in Dublin on Sunday. "
"One person has died, with several injured, after severe turbulence on a London to Singapore flight... One passenger says anyone not wearing a seatbelt was "launched into the ceiling"...Another says there were "so many injured people", including some with head wounds"
#ClimateDiary This too is going to get so much worse.
And yes, I am aware of the irony/tragedy/whatever-you-want-to -call -it, that flying contributes to climate change and therefore turbulence. And now pondering whether climate change will in turn soon make flying too dangerous, and that there is a certain justice in that. All this; but for now do feel sorry for people on this flight. #Turbulence#SingaporeFlight
A thorough analysis of X-ray fluctuations in the CHEX-MATE sample of 64 clusters observed with XMM-Newton, as a proxy for the gas velocity fluctuations due to turbulence.
"Clear air #turbulence is caused by instability in the jet stream, which is increasing as the atmosphere warms.
In a recent study, his team found that over the past 40 years, severe clear air turbulence over the North Atlantic increased by more than 50%."

Black & White rendering of the growth of a simulated cluster of galaxies, undergoing several minor and major mergers - and finally ending up being a fairly spherical and relaxed system.
Setups like this are used to characterize the 3D dimensional and spectral properties of #turbulence on large scales in between galaxies
ENZO hydro simulations (PPM solver) with 3 levels of fixed mesh refinement everywhere.
🤯 Holy sh*t, #sympy is such a crazy powerful :python: #Python package, look how much you can get out of a single one-line expression and some fancy decorators and wrappers.
