Almost got scammed selling some stuff online. 🤙

Had a person send me their number as an interested buyer and told me to text them. I did (first mistake), and we arranged a meetup time. Then they asked if, for their safety, they could send me a six digit code (some of you already know where this is going) that I could repeat back to them to verify myself.

I said, "absolutely!" And sure enough, I got a Google Voice verification number. lol

If you're not familiar with the scam, shady people will take your phone number and try to create a Google Voice account with it. If you provide them with the 6-digit code that Google sends you, they can "verify" that they are you, and then basically use your phone number to run scams, commit fraud, etc. It's nasty business.

I called them out, blocked them, then reported them to the marketplace website and to the FTC--though, almost certainly, they were using the phone number of another poor soul to carry this out.

I used to work as a social engineer, running phishing campaigns (ethically, with consent lol), against Fortune 1000 companies to assess their level of vulnerability. Luckily for me, I was super familiar with this, but most of the people I told about it have said, "Oh, I probably would have fallen for that...", and even I set myself up for it.

So that is why I'm posting this. Please be aware of sketchy shit like this. If someone is asking you for a verification code over SMS or email, tread with EXTREME caution. Also, it's usually pretty shady if a stranger you're already chatting with wants to move to a new platform. Not always, but if someone emails or messages you on Facebook to ask you to text them, that's a little weird. I'd had legitimate buyers/sellers do that, so it's not unheard of, but it should put you on guard.

If you buy/sell/trade online frequently, it's a good idea to use a dedicated MySudo number, VOIP number, and/or a burner phone for that.

Stay safe out there, kids.

Are there any good "feminist" out there? It doesn't necessarily have to have overt philosophically themes (but it def can), just anime that have well-written, well-rounded leading women characters.

A lot of the anime I consume has mostly hypersexualized women characters (I don't go out of my way for that, it seems like it's just kind of a staple of the medium). For instance, I really like shonens, but they can be super fan-servicey. I'd like to shake that up.

I know there are some great Miyazaki characters, but other than that, I'm not aware of many others. are very welcome.

EDIT: I wasn't expecting so many replies! 0.o Looks like there are some awesome recommendations here, thank you all so much! ❤️

Are there any other users here with hardware? I've been using the spin of Fedora 38 for over a year now, and while I adore KDE and have for years, I'm having some issues lately and I can't help but wonder if Nvidia's crappy drivers are not a great fit for KDE. 😔

Have any of you lovely tried both and KDE on Nvidia? Is there any noticeable difference in performance/compatibility/bugginess? Would switching to Gnome be a better fit for my system, or would I likely see all the same issues?

In that same vein, has anyone had any luck getting Wayland to work well on Nvidia hardware? IIRC, 39 or 40 is going to cut X11 altogether, which is tough for me cause Fedora is my favorite , but Wayland is a terrible experience for me, at least with Fedora KDE and my RTX 2070 Super.

I'm so tempted just to ditch Nvidia altogether, but I would miss DLSS and good performance with raytracing, so it's a really hard choice. 😥

Have you ever met anyone that hated pizza? I've met tons of people that love pizza and a couple people that are relatively indifferent to it, but I don't think I've ever met anyone that actively dislikes pizza.

Do pizza haters exist, or is it the great equalizer of the culinary world?

I had no idea was a thing (or I just forgot about it--either way, thanks, @KydiaMusic for the notice! lol) so due to my choice in username, I feel obligated to share a little about my experience. 😁

So here's the heavy shit: It's estimated that kids with receive over 20,000 more negative messages/corrections than neurotypical kids by the time they are 10 years old. That's not an insignificant number on paper, but living it is something else entirely.

I was diagnosed at 21 years old. When someone goes undiagnosed that long, it means that they've internalized more than a few stories they've been told about themselves. "I'm stupid," "I'm lazy," "I'm a failure," "I'm afraid of success," "I can't do anything right," and other fun fables. This is a quasi-universal experience for us because it's not just "hard" to avoid internalizing that. It's not the same as having a bully tell you you're a sack of crap every day at school; it's everyone in your life--friends, teachers, your parents. When the people that love you most in the world are fed up with you on a daily basis, it wreaks havoc on your self-esteem.

Now here's the truth about ADHD: Yes, it's a disadvantage in school, at work, and in our relationships. The fact is, however, that having an ADHD brain is not the problem. ADHD will only remain a disability while the world continues to be disabling to us.

The ADHD brain is wild. It's untamed. We're out-of-the-box thinkers. We're creative. We're perpetual students and teachers. We're passionate, excitable, bright, and lively people. ADHD brains are typically charismatic and have a veritable toolbox of skills and acquired knowledge. We're often great in a crisis and can think fast on our feet when put in a corner. Our brains actually take in more information than neurotypical brains, and while it can be intensely overwhelming at times, it also means we are surprisingly observant and skilled multi-taskers. In fact, studies have shown that, despite our "scattered" nature and difficulty directing our attention, we can be given a task in a room full of distractions and not only complete the task more efficiently than our neurotypical counterparts, but we can recall more details about the distractions and environment afterward.

All this is to say that there is a real need for in our world, because have so much to offer but so many of us don't get anywhere near what we need to thrive. We need parents and teachers to be curious about us, not judgmental. We need leadership at school and at work that is knowledgeable about our condition. We need accommodations to be accessible to us, if not baked into more systems for everyone. We need timely diagnoses, especially for girls/women, people of color, and intersectional folks who are all systematically under-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, and ignored.

Anyway, thank you for reading. Sincerely. Go give an ADHDer a hug. Peace and love. 🤙

It seems like a pretty new thing, with games like Stardew Valley, A Short Hike, and Untitled Goose Game feeling really fresh and almost coming out of nowhere; but, I can't help but wonder--how new is the concept really?

Besides Harvest Moon (Stardew's inspo), are there any other #RetroGames that would fit into this genre today? 🤔

I finished a book for the first time in... I literally don't even know how long!!

I know some people with are bookworms, but unfortunately, I am not. I want to be, and I enjoyed reading very much growing up, but as an adult it's just become so hard to wrangle my brain into picking up a book and then keeping it on track for more than a page or two at a time.

But damn it, I did it, I enjoyed it, and I feel immensely proud of myself for it. It took me longer than I wanted it to, and I had to wrestle with a bit of internalized ableism and shame... and you know what? I'm gonna do it again.

That's right, friends. Watch out, because on his own timeline, this guy's going to have read two whole books in recent memory. 😎

I bought Alan Wake on Steam back in 2013 and I'm only just now playing it for the first time. The crazy thing is, besides some elements of the graphics, it feels like a game that might have recently come out. I'm not even playing the remaster, just the old version and it holds up extremely well.

I'm about to begin Chapter 6, but the first 5 have been a blast to play--except for the driving levels. Those are ass. Also, the birds. The birds can F off.

Despite any minor gripes, I am pretty damn invested in the story. I am a little bummed that I didn't get into this game sooner, but I'm also happy to have the chance to appreciate it now. I'll def be checking out Alan Wake's American Nightmare and finally beating Control before AW2 inevitably hits Steam.

Though, my next game after this will be replaying Eastward before the new DLC drops. 🤌

EDIT: For anyone playing the original (not remastered) AW, try these launch options: -noblur -sensscale=0.60. They remove the awful motion blur and mellow out the camera sensitivity.

Anyone here use the Pocket 2+?

I'm trying to find a good CRT shader for to preserve transparency effects (like the waterfalls in Sonic 2) and dithering. The problem is, a lot of shaders that are lightweight enough (easymode, lottes-fast, etc.) don't seem to do the trick, the ones that work well (sonkun, royale) are too heavy for the hardware, and some that might be solid contenders are made for 1080p+ resolutions and create giant, goofy scanlines at 480p.

The are so easy with the lcd-v2-color shaders, but finding a good CRT shader for home console has been tough with this device.

Learning new skills with can be tough. Obviously, it is a learning disability, so there's that, but also, if I'm interested and the hyperfocus kicks in, I can learn fucking rocket science in a week if I really want to (okay, maybe that's a slight hyperbole... 🤔). The hardest part for me when I actually care about something is that it's so hard to just let myself be a beginner. I wanna be a master TODAY.

I've been studying voice acting for the last few years (off and on, because consistency is hard), and I've come a long way in the last year especially, but I'm still lacking a lot of vital experience and my brain is telling me to skip five steps and dive into the deep end NOW.

Being patient and disciplined is so hard. 😩

Hey , I have an RTX 2070 Super and since I'm a Linux gamer 98% of the time, I've been thinking about going team red. I found a dude who might be down to trade me a Radeon VII for my 2070S... is that a good deal or a bad deal?

Linux compatibility should be way better, and it seems like performance is comparable, but idk about raytracing performance and I've heard the R VII can be pretty loud.

Opinions? Advice?

Anyone here have any experience with ? I'm in need of a new phone, and I'm kinda considering getting a or and flashing Graphene, but I have some questions.

  1. Can you game on it? lol I mostly play , not many games (though I do get down on some of the ). I know the Pixel's chipset should be able to handle up through some PS2 and Gamecube, which is def enough for me, but if it can handle some Yuzu and/or Vita3K, that would be rad. Just curious if that all works within Graphene's sandboxing and if there are any performance issues.

  2. How does the sandboxed Play Services work? Do you install it, then have to give specific apps permission to access Play Services? How much can you lock down Google apps, like Google Camera, Google Maps, etc., if I choose to use those over the stock/FOSS options? I'll probably go like I usually do, but it never hurts to have options.

  3. I've messed with custom roms a fair bit, but not a specifically privacy/security-oriented one like Graphene. Is there anything that someone coming from a relatively vanilla AOSP experience would find jarring or unexpected?

  4. I use via currently. Does anyone on Graphene currently use this? Does it work as expected?

  5. I know GrapheneOS + the is kind of the pinnacle of security in mobile devices rn. What have you personally noticed about the and of your own digital experience since switching?

Any thoughts and opinions are welcome! Thanks, friends. 😃

I've been really excited for since they announced it. I was one of the few people I guess that actually liked Captain Marvel, and I love Brie Larson in the role. I also loved Ms. Marvel. It wasn't a perfect show, but it had so much heart and Iman Vellani is THE stand-out addition to the post-Endgame , imo.

But I started to sweat a little when the release date started crawling up and they basically stopped marketing it. I was getting Secret Invasion flashbacks. Now reviews are rolling in, and one of my go-to critics that I typically agree with had some real bad stuff to say. In fact, I don't remember the last time he was that harsh on a film. 😬

Is this going to be another forgettable bomb? 😭

There's a coffee place not terribly far from me called "Kelly Latte's" that has been around since I was a kid.

I went there yesterday, there was no one behind me in line, and I was talking to the barista, so I finally found my opportunity to ask the burning question I've had about that place for 15+ years.

I asked, "so, is the name Kelly Latte's because it's insinuating that the owner's last name is Latte?"

They were like, "what?"

So I said, "Well, it's not Kelly's Latté, meaning that Kelly owns the establishment that makes lattés, and it's not Kelly Lattés as in they are Kelly's signature lattés. It's Kelly Latte's, possesive, indicating that the woman who owns the business is named Kelly Latte, like her last name is Latte."

The barista paused for a moment and said, "I mean, there was a Kelly. Her last name wasn't Latte. She lost the company in her divorce. The new owner's name is Chad, he's a really nice guy."

That didn't address my grammatical concern, but it was juicy gossip, so I will take it.

You're running a fine establishment there, Chad.
