I can't believe they actually built the transparent gadget anyone watching any sci-fi movie will say it's a bad idea. But yeah it's awesome technology can do this, it's just a privacy nightmare.

Also just going to shill Curse Crackers: For Whom the Belle Toils because that game is fantastic. If you want a 2D platformer with a ton of charm, great music, and absolutely stellar movement and level design, definitely grab it. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1726760/Curse_Crackers_For_Whom_the_Belle_Toils/

I like how this is barely a decade old, but because of how fast VR moved and that being one of those digital camera cusps, this feels like ancient history

(I was there, in the early mines- I saw such sights, such screendoored sights)

@glassbottommeg Good ol' screen door. I've still got an Oculus DK2 around here with the single little camera you had to place on your computer monitor for tracking.

Most smart devices are incredibly dumb.

In this 8th moving vlog, I set up @homeassistant Yellow with a @Raspberry_Pi to solve some of my first world problems—but using smart automation.

AyotoCorp,
@AyotoCorp@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@geerlingguy Home Assistant is such a huge QOL improvement once you get it set up, plus it can help save a ton of money with heating and charging devices.

And then you start to veer into dangerous territory with thoughts like "You know, if I spent $300 on a set of ZigBee motion sensors, I could make it so I would never have to touch a single light switch ever again".

AyotoCorp,
@AyotoCorp@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

so hum... Discord is blocked because of cloudflare? so many websites connecting through this service always felt like a bad idea to me, if this goes down, a lot of stuff also goes down.

AyotoCorp,
@AyotoCorp@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink According to the Discord's status page, it has something to do with the API which would explain why the mobile app seems to be working fine and the rest of the internet isn't exploding as well.

Cloudflare DOES die a bit too frequently given how important it is to the internet's current normal function though, it's true.

100% completion achieved for ! Great game, highly recommended if you like sick giant robot action (or dressing up your robots). It's also just a super good action game in general. Bit of a difficulty curve at the start, but honestly once you get used to the flow of figuring out what works for your build in a mission and what needs to change, it's not too bad and honestly quite forgiving.

A screenshot of a Steam achievement. The achievement is called "Armored Core", and is unlocked by unlocking all other achievements. The date unlocked is Sep 23, 2023 at 6:19 PM, and 4.0% of players have this achievement.

Folks, if you believe the #Unity3D backpedal, you need to- sit with your feelings a sec, because. Heh.

Nobody deletes a git repo for "low views." #GameDevs don't delete anything unless someone tells them to / they need to, because, why would you? It costs nothing to just leave it there. Unless.

AyotoCorp,
@AyotoCorp@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg Their feefees got hurt by the low view count and they decided to make everyone else pay the fee-fees.

glassbottommeg, (edited ) to gamedev
@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

It's nice that walked back to terms that don't apply unless you use their latest engine, but that's the take-away: you need to not use their latest anymore. Finish your game. Find another engine. This is just an escape clause.

Anyone who sticks with them will get screwed the next time their c-suite wants to goose their stock price.

If you can find a way to keep making games on old Unity versions, that works too probably. But. You'll hit issues if you want to target consoles. There is no porting path for most (any?) Unity versions more than 2 years old at time of port.

EDIT: (but really even old versions, they already changed their minds once on that, so assuming they won't again is foolish- find a new engine after you finish out current projects)

AyotoCorp,
@AyotoCorp@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@glassbottommeg Assuming that they don't decide to retroactively change things again. There's nothing in either of their posts saying that they can't do that, and it's far from being any kind of legal document. Literally nothing stopping someone from just shoving everyone into a sacrificial lava pit for $3.50 and a bottle of soda in the future.

_benui, to random

What blows my mind every time some big corporate clusterfuck happens is thinking about the number of people a decision has to pass through before it gets out to the public.

The bad idea, the vague wording, the lack of thought for edge cases, how it would affect various user types. All of it had to be missed by so many people.

AyotoCorp,
@AyotoCorp@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@_benui Or worse, and was apparently the case here for Unity, every single one of those people saying it was a terrible idea were just ignored.

@glassbottommeg@peoplemaking.games avatar

Huh, so Unity has reached the killing-the-golden-goose point of their enshittification: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/business/unity-to-start-charging-fee-pegged-to-game-installs

20c per install doesn't sound like much to PC users, but that's potentially enough to nuke mobile gaming entirely. Which they know, because they also run the stats system mobile devs use to calculate ARPU/ARPPU.

Unreal taking a small cut of revenue works fine. That's based on you know, money you made.

Unity charging based on "Installs" might actually cost you money in mobile space. Or if you do a PS+ freebie. Or GamePass. Or especially an EpicStore freebie. They know what they're doing, and it's fucking evil.

EDIT: looks like it's a one time fee per install, the "monthly" is just poorly explained, as confirmed in a forums reply from a random employee, naturally

@glassbottommeg The one thing I want to know about is how pirated games are going to factor into this. I assume they'd be treated basically the same as if the game was free to play in terms of the telemetry, so would devs now have to back pay for every single pirated copy?

Seeing folks from Insomniac, Blizzard, and Obsidian attack Baldur's Gate 3 for the way they released the game REALLY makes me want to buy it out of principle.

Why are they picking on this game and didn't do so with the likes of a game like Elden Ring?

I'm grumpy about this, lol.
