A lot of criticism of Mastodon community vibes going on over at Bluesky

BlakeL,

@tchambers @micahflee I'd love to have a AP<->AT bridge, and there's a TypeScript library available to do so.

Not sure how to phrase this, but can we learn from or replace ? Like the , they have local human moderation. While they are a closed platform, maybe our path towards greater decentralization could be lots of servers based on location. Instead of recommending mastodon.social, give them a drop down based on country, city etc. And provide local information/value on these instances. Build real communities. The extras provides might be perfect for this.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet @wjmaggos I think the Channels feature is well suited for such a setup. That could be (I bet it is) used to have neighborhood-level groups and club groups (i.e. local mutual aid groups), within the broader city/regional instance.
That being said, it's such a missed opportunity that Channels aren't federated.

Yeah, this is a huge difference between Mastodon and Misskey/Calckey.

Misskey/Calckey gives everyone the ability to add cat ears to their avatar. You can do this in settings.

Mastodon would never allow such a thing. They don’t even allow Markdown.

Misskey/Calckey is more about fun.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet They're adding markdown kinda soon ish. The display part is already merged iirc, and there's a WIP PR for the sending part.

It's also not just cat ears, but it also replaces some sequences so that you say "nya".

I think Pixelfed has (had?) a "dog" mode too...

Bluesky absolutely nailed it by targeting the FOMO that runs right through the tech industry.

You could put “invite required” on a cheese sandwich and developers would be selling their grandmothers for access to it. 🙄

as suspicious as I am about #HuggingFace, they're actually pretty good at what they do. HuggingChat is even open source, and is currently using an open source model (except that it appears to be LLaMA-based, meaning it's not free software).
That's probably one of the biggest commitments to open source I've seen, in a world where this is getting increasingly commercial...

#LLM #AI #HuggingChat

BlakeL,

HuggingChat via OpenAssistant gave me this when I asked for a federated chat packet format (for inspiration, I suppose)

{ "sender": "@johndoe@examplefediverse.net", "receiver": "@janesmith@examplefediverse.net", "message": "<https://examplefediverse.me/messages/@johndoe@examplefediverse.net/_matrix/client-server/*/d+> Hello Jane! How can I assist you today?", "timestamp": "2023-03-14T16:35:00Z" }

I find it funny that it uses both "fediverse" and "matrix"...

BlakeL,

I've been trying to figure out where the cover picture in the following article came from. It doesn't mention if it's been edited but this picture seems like the closest match.

Insane vibes.

always feels good after the fact, even if I really wasn't in the mood for it before.

Overcoming laziness is worth it! (Just dress appropriately to avoid weather torture.)

BlakeL,

@dcz I mean, I don't regret my rather dangerous Expeditions, but I do end up totally beat and struggling to walk afterwards... It's a long way (takes me about 30 minutes) to where I typically bike to.

BlakeL,

@dcz I think the major drawback is that I'm going down well-traveled local roads (that don't have sidewalks) mostly because there's nowhere else for me to go. The next town over has greenways and sidewalks but it would be its own journey just to get there, even longer than the one I usually take.

BlakeL,

@dcz the only off road around here is greenways I can't get to or in peoples' yards. and you know how wrong house incidents have turned out recently...

BlakeL, to fediverse

Here's what I expect, and/or kinda hope, for when (or if) Project Barcelona comes to the Fediverse.

  1. A lot of queer-oriented servers will block it immediately. It'll be done to minimize their visibility to the less-moderated wild west of Instagram users.
  2. Instances like fosstodon.org which are aimed at the widest audience possible will likely keep them federated, at least until their moderation inevitably falls far enough below Fediverse standards.
  3. Other instances might end up defederating them for being corporate, mostly anarchist/anti-capitalist instances like Kolektiva or Astral Camp. These are most of the servers that have defederated raspberrypi.social.
  4. Most other instances will probably not consider it worth the effort to block the instance and will keep it open until the slightest hint of trouble.

🧵1/?

BlakeL,

Additionally, I'm not sure what the federation plans for it actually are yet. I've thought about a model for these big companies to enter wild west federation where the big platform users have to manually find and add the small platform users, to add some friction. This probably works best with chat, but could work with Barcelona too, in part by not adding federated users to the algorithm unless the Barcelona user is following the federated user.
Nonetheless, I think it's net gain for everyone if done right.

Calckey offers an interesting feature that I wish Mastodon apps included - the ability to view from what PLATFORM an account comes from. It's missing one thing, which is a clickable link that would take you to the official site of each platform to check it out. I think the beta API from FediDB might be able to assist with that.

Would love to see this in more apps, regardless of platform. Gives casual users a chance to check out other pockets of the fediverse out there.

BlakeL,

@tost @kainoa @TransGal4872 @box464 calckey (and foundkey) is a fork of misskey, it should have everything it had before it got forked.

Data Ethics knows that reforming Big Social is a lost cause. It will not create the conditions for democratic discourse.

If we want social media that's for the people -- not owned by billionaire monopolists -- the Fediverse is the answer.

BlakeL,

@puns_and_ships @jupiter_rowland hello from Calckey, which isn't Mastodon 👋

BlakeL,

@jupiter_rowland @puns_and_ships this looks like a link soup on Calckey. Wondering if this is Hubzilla not following convention/standard, or if the standard doesn't exist and Masto and friends just settled on a de facto mention/tag link standard?

BlakeL,

@jupiter_rowland @s @puns_and_ships It might be possible that what Calckey did was throw out the zero width spacers (although it could have been done earlier), then parse mentions, then parse Markdown?
I'm quite familiar with Markdown. *It even works on key, even including some extras!
Out of curiosity: how does the above line look for you?

BlakeL,

@jupiter_rowland @s @puns_and_ships The false-account thing is something I noticed Calckey does a lot. When it sees an unlinked @something, it assumes it's a mention on the same server as whatever account wrote it. Maybe this is a workaround for something and it would break integration with another platform otherwise?

The hashtag link soup seems to be because, for some reason, it's interpreting the bracket characters as valid hashtag characters and assuming it's a hashtag, and completely ignoring that's a hashtag link.

Calckey probably needs to stop making those assumptions for incoming messages...

atomicpoet, to random

Calckey is not "another Fediverse".

It is part of the same Fediverse as Mastodon.

BlakeL,

@another_katt @atomicpoet @pablowapsi Perhaps turn off "Automatically load more"?
