Mastodon is terrible because it’s hard to join—unlike , a social network that is hard to join, which is great.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet why don't you guys on Mastodon come spin with us over here on :calckey:

So, is all the hype now and a lot of people are falling for the olde "invite link" trick which not only paints, what is ultimately going to be another social media shitshow, as an exclusive club, but also sneakily turns everyone's curiosity into a vessel for word-of-mouth advertisement to ride piggy back on.

Well, maybe the AT Protocol is at least better than . So, since it is on [1] , let's have a quick look and ... Aww shit! Thread time..

BlakeL,

@raccoon @razanau I'm not completely sure but there is a build process involved for the frontend. I think that's what the Node bits are for. Also I think the frontend is written in React iirc and maybe renders server-side; it's not (just) a client-side application.

@TonyStark
I am trying to figure out how to communicate to Americans how effed up this is. I lived outside this country for 20 some years and this is not normal. I never once thought that maybe I should not go to the store, or be in my yard or send my kid to school because there could be a shooting. I never once got rejected for healthcare because of my lifestyle or knew anyone who did. I never once (even in a dictatorship) thought, I better not tell anyone my politics they might kill me.

BlakeL,

@statmonkey @TonyStark Just the other day some kid brought an airsoft gun (adult Nerf, basically) to my brother's school. Whole place went into lockdown half the day. Everyone was scared shitless.

I was of course not there, operating on limited information, and I thought I might lose my brother or best friend, that my high school's name would become another marker of an era. When they finally caught the kid with the toy gun, we all breathed a sigh of relief.

And this isn't the first time this has happened.

The threat is real. It can happen by you being in the wrong driveway, by you going to school or the grocery store, or by being in downtown. Every turn you make here, you might not make it to the next one alive.

We're living in a dystopia and we're doing everything we can. Voting, protesting, petitioning, everything short of chopping heads, civil war, or quicker suicide (i.e. by going on strike. There's a plethora of reasons why that isn't happening, if you'd like to hear them.) We can't save ourselves, and nobody's coming to save us. I'm just hoping I can make it out of here before it all comes crashing down.

Elon was able to buy Twitter because it was centralized and one company owned it.

Bluesky is supposed to prevent that from happening—but Bluesky users want to repeat the same mistake.

They don’t realize that Elon could buy Bluesky right now and it would all be over.

See screenshot.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet I think it's in part because you replied out of context. It leads people to wonder "where the hell did that come from?" I've made that mistake countless times.

I think this is the greatest flaw with decentralized and federated systems: they have holes about where you can interact, all in different places.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet @TAI You won't get here the institutions (let's say NPR, although I don't know who is on Bluesky at the moment) that Dorsey attracts to there, if you don't give those institutions what they want. It's the same with journalists and more.

At the very least, Bluesky is supposed to be built where we can run bridges, so this point might soon become moot. Somehow though I doubt that'll last, just like XMPP. At some point, it'll be all the same. One official app, no other choice. One centrally controlled network. That way nobody has to think (for themselves).

Now that I think about it, this is the exact reason ChatGPT is so popular.

For the first time, I got (quite unreasonably) dunked on in the QRTs here on Fedi.

Quite an odd experience, can't say I liked it.

@fediversenews

So, I think I've dug as deeply into the drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.

  • Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.

Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.

If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.

I can't put my finger or exactly why but there's something that feels really off about this statement.

RE: https://calckey.social/notes/9e3ixkpxr5

BlakeL,

@funbreaker it might make more sense if you read what it replies to. Or the recent drama.
Defederation disconnects people.

BlakeL, to random

I should absolutely have avoided browsing the Fediblock tag.

I ran into a lot of disgusting stuff in there as well as someone claiming the Newsie admin is running even more instances than he probably actually is, without proof that it's actually him and not an imposter.

Granted, Jeff has always been suspicious to me.

Someone else should post about the dangers of defederation if one remains on Newsie.

BlakeL,

Fediblock is going to be the reason or Nostr takes over.

mjdxp, to random

can you imagine the utter chaos that would ensue if, for whatever reason, microsoft decided to completely discontinue development of windows? people who don't understand how computers work wouldn't know what to do, and companies which depend on windows only programs would cease to exist, it would truly be an apocalyptic scenario

this is why we need to start moving to linux

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet @mjdxp What a security nightmare.

BlakeL, to random

I feel like the incident this morning in Cary is still unresolved. I'm still hearing that there were three kids with guns, yet only one was found.
Who's to say they're not going to have another scare tomorrow when the other two go back for the guns they stashed? Or, how would we know that there was only one individual involved in the incident?

@atomicpoet There's another somewhat smelly thing Jay Graber and are doing. They're calling AT "open source" to suggest "hey, no worries, big money hates open source. You're safe from corporate bullying!"

What's not said? It's an MIT license. You can take it, throw huge money into your own version, add massive new features, and then NOT publish the source code (legally). This seems to fit @davetroy's thesis that this is all a puppet show, much more staged than we want to believe.

BlakeL,

@shoq @atomicpoet @davetroy None of Bluesky is open source at the moment, except for some TypeScript packages...

BlakeL,

@shoq @atomicpoet @davetroy looks like I was wrong-- here's some more. https://github.com/bluesky-social/

The most revealing aspect of the drama has been the truly feudal nature of the fediverse / feudalverse.

A world of conflict was occurring between admins/feudal lords mostly unknown to instance users/subjects … until defederations and admin resignations occur … at which point the users have to blindly work out what’s happened and how it affects them and which instances they’re now blind to.

Just like monarchs declaring war against each other.
@fediversenews

BlakeL,

@maegul @fediversenews I think this is part of the appeal of Nostr.

I saw https://mstdn.social/@stux post recently about a secret "Mastodon meeting," and now this...

I kinda dig their technique and it's definitely working.

Anyway about this post specifically, I think it has to do with this mockup on the linked page. I think it'll show the link in some but not all places, and it'll maybe be next to the handle?

Also Calckey doesn't support the link check-marks at all yet 😔

I'm hearing about a lot of cool upcoming changes being teased and I'm so here for it!

Is anyone able to do a hashtag search for on mastodon.social?

For some reason, when I do this, mastodon.social gives me an 404 error page. I've tried this while being logged in and out of mastodon.social.

Why is this happening?

See screenshot.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet I'm aware that Mastodon servers can, via the admin panel, manually block search results, trends, and iirc even the usage of any hashtag that the server has ever seen.
It'd be quite sus but not off brand for Eugen to do that.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet It's within reason to expect that of him, given his attitude and track record recently.

  • There's one box on the website now that mentions the rest of the Fediverse. One. Everything else is rather misleading, including "Follow anyone across any Mastodon server from a single account," ignoring the whole, it's way more than just Mastodon thing.
  • A lot of smaller server admins are reporting that he and the rest of the team have been unresponsive about adding their servers to the list.
  • He doesn't talk about or share anything that isn't built specifically for Mastodon.

It would be extraordinarily petty and somewhat unexpected but it's well within the realm of possibility.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet I've noticed searches don't quite work right when you aren't signed in. For instance, you have to have an account at Universeodon to use its superpowered search.

BlakeL,

@abid yeah the manual link works 🤔

I think that might be considered a bug though.

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet I caught word it's not malice after all; very good to hear!

BlakeL,

@atomicpoet I suppose I should have thought about it like that.

micahflee, to random

A lot of criticism of Mastodon community vibes going on over at Bluesky

BlakeL,

@publictorsten @micahflee Some instances (probably not yours or the one I'm on right now) will delete the posts or ban you for it. My main instance, Fosstodon, is probably in that camp, mainly since it's super professionally oriented. That's also why it's so hesitant to defederate sometimes.

BlakeL,

@micahflee calckey has a lot more shitposting

I've figured out the problem (I think). calckey.social is auto redirecting to calkey.social/public/local, and there's nothing there!

The only way I can view my timeline is by switching to deck layout and adding it as a column, or putting the timeline in a widget 👀

BlakeL,

@bloodwrites @kainoa by any chance are you using the Graze or FediAct extensions? I remember Graze would keep redirecting me there so I ended up turning it off.
