    From a renter’s perspective, I do not trust my neighbors to handle and maintain the batteries without causing fires.

    I don’t think half of them could do it without forgetting weather (rain, wind, heat and cold) factors and their implications. (For example, combined wind and rain puts water in startling places that vary storm to storm.)

    Even less than half are going to manage hooking up the batteries to anything useful without causing trouble with cords in places that they will be damaged by landscaping/maintenance or interfere with other residents or cause ‘damage’ to property by drilling holes in walls or doors (without knowing what wiring/pipes are inside the wall).

    At least my landlord would have to get an installation inspected for fire safety. And my landlord could place solar so that the parking lot gets plugs, not just our apartments, where what we hook panels/batteries up to without messing up the ancient electrical systems is ambiguous.

    DrKylara,

    @futurebird it's counterproductive for haunts to burn down their dwellings. So there should totally be a market...

    DrKylara,

    @youronlyone @thepoliticalcat

    Why would the date of birth need to be moved?

    Whether the day itself occurs in a given year is irrelevant, legally speaking. At the end of February 28th, when the clock strikes midnight, the person is a year older, whether the next day is February 29th or March 1st.

    My Goddaughter will be 8 years old at the end of February, but will only have her second ‘birthday’. (We celebrate birthdays on a convenient weekend day, regardless of exact birthdate.) I’ve known a few other leap-day babies closer to my own age, as well. Most businesses that offer birthday specials will give them to leap-day people on either Feb 28th or Mar 1, so long as you don’t try to claim the special at the same business on both days.

    Since I'm stuck inside again, tell me a podcast I should listen to.

    There can be only one! You get one choice, don't give me a list of 5, I can't do it.

    Give me an episode that you think best represents the podcast.

    It’s like, one day, you’re cool and hip…

    Then suddenly, you’re like, “That Buick looks nice.”

    DrKylara,

    @AmishSuperModel @BigAngBlack
    Does it say something about me that I got a buick at 16?

    DrKylara,

    @BigAngBlack
    My parents bought it, but I did have a variety of choices over the course of a few months. I liked that the Buick had the best sound system of the options we found (kinda sad, but it’s the truth), and was significantly quieter, both inside and out.

    We declared that it had a “six-body trunk” at some point in college, making me a popular co-conspirator for acquisition of materials for pranks. And it could transport 6 people legally, if someone was willing to sit in the middle front and get elbowed occasionally by the driver. Good engine, too: my friend once got that Buick up to 104mph on a salt flat.

    I kept that car going for 13 years, 2 degrees, and 2 jobs, and I still miss it.

    DrKylara,

    @BigAngBlack
    The struts and head gasket both died at the same time. The electrical system was full of ghosts by then and she needed both new breaks and new tires as well.

    I had a real job at that point with a 45 minute commute, and it made more sense to put money into a new car than spend twice as much on the old one as she was worth. Ended up giving her to a friend of a friend who could do all of the mechanical work himself, only paying for parts.

    DrKylara,

    @BigAngBlack
    I needed something with ground clearance for beaches and back country. And the Buick SUVs were out of my price range.

    DrKylara,

    @BigAngBlack
    Hell no. Jeeps are rattle-y, gas-guzzling toys.

    Geologists and friends buy Subarus and drive them into the ground. Unless they need something bigger, in which case Suburbans, Ford Transit vans, and various trucks become options.

    I joined the Subaru cult (and was sad to learn that the vehicle did not come with a dog installed in the back).

    Thank you for helping more of us see the history of parts of this continent. We learn so much about Europe and Asia in school, but the Cultures of the Americas are just as important for understanding the human experience and how environment and resources shape societies.

    I will attend any transition rite anyone invites me to within 50 miles of my home. I will take up to a 5 hour plane ride to attend for someone I actually know.

    I feel a proper celebration goes a long way to acknowledge and cement changes of status (and changes in address like Miss to Mrs, she to he, Miss to Dr, whatever) in people’s heads. And I love ceremonies, rites, and all manor of symbolic and communal ways of marking an event or change. Put someone in a robe, garland or sash and I will be there.

    Starlink has real consequences in terms of space debris, interferece with astronomical observations and a non-trivial carbon and pollution footprint.

    Add to that the fact that one man can unilaterally decide to shut out any person, organization or region from Starlink service with zero appeals or repercussions. I cannot believe how many scientists and governments are just sitting back and watching this idiocy unfold.

    there is glitter made from the mineral mica now. Better for the environment and also less of a skin irritant when used in cosmetics.
    I still find it on my scalp weeks after glittering my hair, but at least it itches less than the usual plastic stuff.
