    Ha, ha, ha...hmm - do you still have your receipt? Dogwood is named after the berries which are, "not fit for a dog to eat" and were known as dogberries long before the earliest known instances of "Dogwood".

    I have only just recently looked up what the difference is between a federation and a confederation: roughly, in a confederation membership is voluntary, whereas in a federation it is not.

    The Fediverse is actually a confederacy…

    I don’t know why I am telling you this.

    Frances_Larina,
    @Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

    @john

    The problem at least here in America is..well, "Confederacy' has certain racist, bigoted, political and social undertones.

    But also, membership is required if one wants to connect to other instances, correct? So perhaps "federation" is not inaccurate after all?

    As an behaviorally nonconforming (but still respectful, polite and kind) ADHD autistic who has a solid history of being a much valued employee everywhere I've worked over the years, this terrifies me. I have no doubt such a system would flag me as being a problem. It's not hard to guess where they got the data for the models, either.

    Depending on the models used to train the AI, it could so incredibly easily end up being used - intentionally or not - against disabled people who by nature are behaviorally nonconforming.

    I'm trans, ND and know a surprisingly immense number of similar people who work as developers. Among both those communities, that theory is not uncommon at all. And reading through the history of computing itself...it's always been an ND field.

    And let's not forget that like school boards, sheriffs get to run as "nonpartisan" as if they really don't have a political bias. Except for that MAGA/CSPOA one, of course.

    Maybe that - changing school boards and sheriffs to partisan on the ballot - could go a long way to actually changing part of the problem.

    We've overloaded too many systems that move heat energy around the planet in a predictable way, and now the weather is becoming unpredictable. It will only get worse.

    Insofar as it being the "new normal", please keep in mind that growing food is completely dependent on being able to predict the weather.

    Calling what we are entering into, "the new normal" completely minimizes it in a very irresponsible manner.

    The disk wobbles. There's a longer cycle of the wobbles, too, that fits the shape of the Earth's orbit & distance to the sun over the course of a year. All due to the solar wind vs gravity. It's all just math, really.

    That's what I and many others have done; we are on instances that have promised to block Threads. But there are larger issues, too. Such as whether Meta will scrape personal data from the Fediverse. Given the company's well earned reputation, it's a safe bet they will. That goes against the spirit many feel is the core of the Fediverse.

    Frances_Larina,
    @Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

    @RenewedRebecca @Teri_Kanefield

    Exactly.

    One solution though that is also being discussed is for admins to post usage licenses for the data from their instance. Hypothetically, it can work. However, exactly zero of them could afford to take Meta to court for a protracted lawsuit, and Zuckerberg knows it. In most cases, the only real power admins have to protect their users is defederation of abusive platforms. That is build into the design of the Fediverse. It's is how all of this is supposed to work!

    Frances_Larina,
    @Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

    @Teri_Kanefield

    "You can always find a server willing to block all of Threads and move there."

    And people who want Threads posts to show up can explicitly follow Threads accounts. Or create a login on the Threads instance, too.

    A huge selling point of is that nothing interferes your feed. Why not let users decide which domain to block?

    Frances_Larina,
    @Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

    @kkarhan @thunderbird @anantagd

    True, but if I join an instance with values important to me that will block instances that cause harm, I'm showing support for our community by joining it instead using blocklists. Many of such instances are , but sometimes they're also specific to oppressed minorities, etc.. and that defederating is just as important.
