They should give out a ‘welcome to Murica’ info pack to immigrants. Chapters: health insurance, how to write a check, why are money transfers often not instant, what the heck is a strip mall, if it’s a ‘nice neighborhood’ look closely for the racism, why are there no shops and restaurants in residential areas, they put mayo instead of butter into sandwiches, and if you don’t have a drivers license you don’t exist (just explained all of this in one afternoon to friends who just moved here)

Long COVID friends, need your help.

Friend has . US-based Corporate Employer is bullying them with RTO.
What's the least traumatic way to get a doc's note? Can PCPs provide? Is this covered by ADA?

Pls repost for wider reach 🙏

JMMaok,
@JMMaok@mastodon.online avatar

@upol

Lots of good advice in the thread already. The ADA is based on the concept of reasonable accommodations being negotiated on a case by case basis. So to the extent your friend, or people helping your friend, can clearly articulate the reasonable accommodations that allow your friend to fulfill the job requirements, that will help. This info is needed alongside the medical documentation of disability.

Hi folks, I know folks mean well when they post information on news events, but PLEASE vet your sources before reposting dramatic articles/etc. you see. If you're not familiar with the publication, DON'T POST IT. Or check on the source...

For example, I recently saw an article posted from the Daily Caller, which is essentially a channel for white supremacist propaganda, interspersed with other normal news.

Are there any well-structured opportunities for volunteers to contribute to the Fediverse? Specifically I am looking for an opportunity that would fit a young person with strong coding skills who needs to document volunteer time. Needs to be more structured that just ‘Sure, here’s the GitHub.’ Any leads?

Planning a ? Include Mastodon at least as prominently in your materials as you do other social media. If you ask presenters or attendees for handles, ask for their Mastodon handle. This is an important opportunity for the Fediverse to reach, welcome, and engage key global audiences.

We've all heard time and again "this won't make any difference to the Republican base." And, it's true, they've been remarkably consistent in their support for Trump.

Yet, statements like that are always only true until, eventually, they aren't.

This recent NPR story, headline "GOP support for Trump softens as the former president's legal troubles mount" reports a shift in poll results. https://www.npr.org/2023/07/28/1190748917/trump-republican-support-independents-indictment-january-6-poll

Consider that context before throwing another "nothing matters" on the pile.

Even as someone who mostly replies, I think these would be good features to have. If someone really only wants to talk to their followers or mutuals, I don’t want to be there. Giving people mod power over their replies appeals to me less.

Maybe until the feature is built folks could experiment with a hack, like start with # for followers only and ## for mutuals only? Some Twitter features started as hacks like that.

I’m not who you asked, but you might be interested in the Open Science syllabus I created (Wikiversity link in my bio.) My process involved starting from the Creative Commons Certificate course, which I had taken, and adapting their syllabus and assignments. It seems like it might work for your project (~10 units). Their syllabus is open for students to choose a variety of assignments to demonstrate learning (songs, games, case studies, more …).

hate having to ask this, but what are our most trusted AI detectors for writing assignments?

JMMaok,
@JMMaok@mastodon.online avatar

@DrTCombs

Have heard absolutely nothing good about any of them. Lots of ethnically biased false positives.

JMMaok,
@JMMaok@mastodon.online avatar

@DrTCombs

One option might be a regular Turnitin check for passages that appear elsewhere but aren’t correctly cited. The AI got its text from somewhere.

Also, consider whether you suspect clear violation of a clearly stated policy. Anything fuzzier than that, probably let it go. But if it is clear and egregious, a conversation with the student (with a witness) can be enlightening.

Sorry you’re having to deal with this.

Would the universities of today, like the way they are run today, fully MBAized, recognized Wittgenstein's contribution

"It (Tractatus) was examined in 1929 by Russell and Moore; at the end of the thesis defence, Wittgenstein clapped the two examiners on the shoulder and said, '"Don't worry, I know you'll never understand it."

Wikipedia tells me his "family was at the centre of Vienna's cultural life" and describes his family home as a palace. His father had an "industrial empire."

Thus, I think the MBAs would find a way to make it work.

I've been asked to do an online meeting on Friday and this will involve screen sharing. I tend to avoid these things like the plague and have already told them I don't use Zoom or Teams.

Are there anythings I need to be wary of from a privacy point of view?

Boosts welcome!

:freddy:

JMMaok,
@JMMaok@mastodon.online avatar

@mxtthxw

The main thing to be aware of is not having anything on your screen that you don’t want to share. Close everything you don’t need. Keep in mind any notifications that might pop up.

You generally have options to share a window, a program, or your entire screen. Try out the actual software you will be using in advance. Window is most private, but awkward if sharing many windows.

A privacy option is to set up a user account that you only use for videoconferencing.

Visiting cultural art centers in Mumbai feels like a very disorienting experience to me.

Just visited a newly launched cultural art center in mumbai which is designed like a 7 star hotel from inside.

It showcased talented artists showing indian handicrafts but the way the designed the corridors & lobbies felt as if designed to make middle class people feel like they don't belong.

I just felt bit icky by the ostentatious display of that elite hotel like aesthetic for an art center

Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).

So far my repertoire includes 2 dishes:

  1. Eggplant Parmesan (Italian)
  2. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (Chinese)

(the family hates eggplant, except me, so we never eat it 🤔 )

I have one general piece of advice on fear of failure that people say is pretty good. It’s specific to journal rejections, though, which is before you submit an article make a list of at least 3 other potential journals you could submit to. That way when you get a rejection (we all get rejections!) you don’t need to dwell. Just incorporate any useful feedback and submit to the next journal.

Here are a few ideas:

In terms of conferences, you might find good discussions at https://openeducationconference.org/ and OEGlobal.

Also some in the open education channel of the Creative Commons Slack (many folks in that community care about openness beyond licensing).

Not sure where they hang out online, but maybe there is an Ungrading community.

Also the OE4BW program.

Audibooks on LP was / is a thing! You could do this. I bet you could get gigs at book festivals.

Also might be a way to close down a venue at last call. Start mixing in more spoken word until it's just someone reading a classic novel or poetry.

Do techbros in bay area use public transport? Or is it more uber/lyft

I think nothing gets you a deep reality check than seeing a sea of depressed exhausted faces jam packed in a crowded train

There is something visceral about travelling in public transport day in and day out, that jolts you out of the bubble of few people you engage with via your screens

You realize vastness of the world, the amount of people that exist & how easy it is to forget how each person is a universe unto themselves
