  • Lamhfada,

@khthoniaa This is why I like . The Gods are so full of Goodness, and therefore love, that it overflows into all of Being and all individuals.

    Lamhfada,

@khthoniaa writes "all the Gods are boniform, and through intelligible wisdom they have a knowledge ineffable, and established above intellect, thus also, I think, through the summit of beauty, every thing divine is lovely. For from thence all the Gods derive beauty, and being filled with it, fill the natures posterior to themselves, exciting all things, agitating them with Bacchic fury about the love of themselves, and pouring supernally on all things the divine effluxion of beauty."

    Lamhfada,

@bodhidave @khthoniaa I've had similar experiences, which I don't talk about a lot as they defy language (or at least my language!) and are private.

But I'd say Platonically the Gods are the Good beyond Being, rather than the children of that (but to each their own).

Finished the Baldur's Gate 3 Goblin Camp/Druid Enclave story last night after work and started making my way through the Underdark but had to use all my revive scrolls when a creature came from nowhere and outright killed most of my party.

I may have to rethink my strategy tonight.

The terms "hard" and "soft" polytheism are relatively new in paganism. Scholars of ancient polytheism started using the terms in the early 2000s to differentiate these large disparities in ancient belief systems that before were lumped together. Naturally, pagans follow academics, and I believe it was Greer from ADF that first popularized the terms in modern paganism.
These words were meant to be a quick summation of how you see the gods, just a general idea. Instead of having to write out a whole essay on how you specifically think of the gods as beings, you could just slap this handy label on it.

They are not meant to be diametrically opposed, and therefore constantly debated.

They are not meant to be an entire identity.

You are not meant to choose either/or, it is a spectrum, and you might only lean one way.

Our labels are just simple, quick ways to connect with others. Because modern polytheists are so widely diverse, we have these little phrases we use to more easily talk to each other, no more than that.

    Lamhfada,

@Cat_LeFey This is why I like the model of Butler, it transcends the soft and hard versions of polytheism and transcends them, to my mind at least.

    Lamhfada,

@Cat_LeFey I think that serves as a good introduction as a lot of his other stuff is very in depth. This has the conclusions and concepts without the massive deep dive into that's in some of his other works.

Watching a few interviews/appearances with , obviously the Late Late with Gay Byrne but also this interview with Arsenio Hall. There's a real gentleness and strength together in Sinéad, and those who had the greatest rapport with Sinéad met that gentleness with their own gentleness.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAf7fGEeRQs

    Lamhfada,

This is why Pat Kenny and Tubridy and many others in Irish and other media couldn't have a proper rapport with Sinéad, they couldn't meet that gentleness.

(Tubridy's interviews and interactions are frankly cringeworthy and I find it hard to watch them).

Gay Byrne's interviews with her could, albeit a bit paternalistically at times, but he could find that gentleness. I don't have as much time for him as many, but I will give him that.

@AimeeMaroux @antiquidons @histodons @mythology The myth of leads to what may be the raunchiest homoerotic passage of in the Phaedrus:

    >"[255c] then the fountain of that stream which Zeus, when he was in love with Ganymede, called “desire” flows copiously upon the lover; and some of it flows into him, and some, when he is filled, overflows outside;"

Odd how the Gaia theory was quietly forgotten.
You'd think with the planet running a fever to get rid of the human infection, the idea of viewing the biosphere as a single self regulating organism would find an audience.

    Lamhfada,

@faduda @stancarey as I recall Lovelock's later later books focused on cybernetics (as in the science of systems and not robots) which probably fell into being too nerdy and academic for the general audience but not rigorous enough to be considered academically.

Thanks to @kd for highlighting this government survey on climate change.

Worth filling out, if only to counter the individualistic bias in the survey itself and leave comments.

I feel like they want answers like everyone should buy a new EV and install a wind turbine, rather than face the systemic changes like critically reducing car use that are necessary and making public transport/cycling better.
